Re: Frosts 2019
Hard frost out between Kaiapoi and Amberley this morning, between Chch and Leithfield the car was reading -3 quite a bit so I'd wager spots got down a degree or two lower than that. Colleague from Cheviot reported -6 like you Richard. Beautiful stuff.

Re: Frosts 2019
Gooooood frost this morning down to minus 4.7C, the coldest so far this year.
Traces of frost around the back still there, this evening as I type.

Reached its coldest of -5.3 at 4.00am now on -4.8, not as cold as yesterday so a sign the anticyclone is now moving east.

Re: Frosts 2019
A question for the statisticians. Has -10°C been recorded this winter in NZ? The lowest I can find from various sources (mostly tweets from NIWA + MetService) are:
-7.4°C at Tara Hill on 27th June and at Hanmer Springs on 19th June
-7.1°C at Omarama on 20th June
-6.8°C at Hanmer Forest on 26th June and Mddlemarch on 19th June
-7.4°C at Tara Hill on 27th June and at Hanmer Springs on 19th June
-7.1°C at Omarama on 20th June
-6.8°C at Hanmer Forest on 26th June and Mddlemarch on 19th June

Re: Frosts 2019
-7.9 in pukaki/twizel on Friday morning (28th) is the lowest temp recorded by MS this year.
So certainly not overly cold yet this winter for these central area's well away from the ocean.

Re: Frosts 2019
Well there hasn't been any significant snowfalls in these inland areas which could add to significant lower temperatures and dosen't look likely with another intense anticyclone moving towards our way next week.

Re: Frosts 2019
The Hanmer Forest site must be a real frost pocket as the township was only showing -6
The breeze we had here died out about midnight allowing it to cool down, made it as low as -2.3deg

-2.1, -1.4, 0.3, -1.2, -2.3 so basically 5 air frosts in a row here.cbm wrote:Spoke too soon, make that 3 frosts , -1.1 this morning. 7 actual air frosts this month. Can’t remember what the start of the month was like but I only have data from the 7th so there may have been more?

Re: Frosts 2019
Thanks to Nev, Melja, John + Richard for answering my question on the lowest temperatures recorded so far this winter in New Zealand. With both NIWA and MetService recording temperature at their own sites, I can understand the confusion at times. The current low of -9°C is still not bad - here in the UK we have had the occasional winter when the -10°C mark was not beaten.

Re: Frosts 2019
15 years ago we would get a -9 every winter, a thing of the past it seems now.
The coldest it got to over night was -3.3 at 2.20am, when the Foehn wind arrived it shot up from -2 at 4.00am to +6.7 at 4.20

Re: Frosts 2019
Frost overnight, down to minus 1.6C again but a NW sky with cloud lifted the temeprature this morning, with the frost going off early.

Re: Frosts 2019
The big difference though is that we have no weather stations at the coldest points in New Zealand like Mount Cook etc, if there was we'd see -25C every winterSimon Culling wrote: ↑Sun 30/06/2019 22:53 Thanks to Nev, Melja, John + Richard for answering my question on the lowest temperatures recorded so far this winter in New Zealand. Re: Frosts 2019
Richard, what is the lowest temperature you have recorded in the Amuri Basin - and does anyone know the lowest recorded at the various sites in Hanmer Springs?

Re: Frosts 2019
7/6/2012 we had a -13 frost after a 30cm snowfall the day before, a car gauge picked up a pocket of cold air near frog rock of -15deg.Simon Culling wrote: ↑Tue 02/07/2019 02:40Richard, what is the lowest temperature you have recorded in the Amuri Basin - and does anyone know the lowest recorded at the various sites in Hanmer Springs?
As Bradley mentioned there would remote areas in NZ where there are no recording stations that must see some brutal temps, the valleys of the Molesworth cattle station would be one.
