Re: General May Weather
Pretty blustery hour or so just now in Amberley. Virga from the mountains towering in the distance.

Hokitika, Mt Cook and Westport airports have thunder in their hourly observations again today. Been a thundery week for the west of the SI.

Re: General May Weather
Wouldn't be surprised, we've had heavy rain in Amberley this arvo and dark skies not that far off. Very visible jet streaks in the high cloud ahead of it. Remains gusty.

Re: General May Weather
Becoming very dark here around 3pm this afternoon with thickening high level rain-bandish looking cloud moving across from the west. Some rain from this from 3pm.
Lightning possible along the Alps but nothing seen from here.

Re: General May Weather
Sadly, thunderstorms dwindling to the west of here.
Not expecting lightning flashes tonight along the Alps like last night.

Re: General May Weather
Storms like going around Auckland because of the Waitakeri ranges, often they move to the south.

Re: General May Weather
Quite a bit of lightning for parts of the North Island overnight but the activity has died off. Interesting that Taupo got a thunderstorm but Auckland didn't.

Re: General May Weather
The spillover rainfall has amounted to quite a handy dump thus far, 18mm though there could be more yet before the colder part of this system kicks in.

Re: General May Weather
Another front coming in this evening. Looks to be largely south of Auckland though. But its something to watch. There are encouraging signs out in mid Tasman currently.
Saturday we get thundery cells with hail.

Re: General May Weather
Not a dry May or autumn in some places - Cropp Waterfall is at over 1550mm for May, and around 4600mm for autumn, the latter being well ahead of its previous high.

Re: General May Weather
Was quite a bit of close, loud thunder at 5am here. Been a long time. Seems like the fundamental pattern change to wetter has finally come, but from here, average rainfall from June onwards will only result in ~900mm for the year which will be amongst the lowest ever recorded. Ruakura was on 173.4 ytd at end of Wednesday, my station 178.6.

Re: General May Weather
If the forecast holds true and the main rain hits here from after midnight we are on track for a very dry mild May, be interesting to see the monthly stats start flowing
