Yes, once that mid-range cloud layers come in from the NW, the cold air gets trapped underneath, with no warming from the sun contributes to single digits temperatures for much of the day.
Today would be the coldest day of the year so far here in Geraldine.

Didn't notice anything unusual. Was there a fire burning some distance upwind of you?
Don't get that crystal clear air that get with S to SE wind, when wind is from any other direction.

I had a guess in mid May that might get to the end of June, i.e half the year gone and only ~250mm of rain. Well on 242mm ytd and only 18mm forecast for next 10 days by EC model, so ~260mm is looking quite possible.

Definitely not fire related. Looked like when fog lifts but you are left with thick haze.

16C at Auckland airport 6.30am.

That high pressure system next week will drag our temperature averages down for the month. Looks like a good run of cold nights.

8mm overnight, 65mm MTD, 264mm YTD. Today’s EC 12Z run upgrading the weekend low to 30 to 40mm for here. The 2nd depression next week of subtropical origins is showing as a significant extratropical cyclone in the south pacific but the ridge is sending well east of NZ.

Antarctic continental surface temps showing incredible anomalies at the moment. It's now having a real impact on the overall global temperature, dropping it by 0.4c in the last 2 weeks. No sign of the tropospheric or stratospheric polar vortex weakening. Ensembles from early July vary quite a bit, so no clear signal yet. When it does weaken, be ready

Just checked the GFS maps... could be quite a strong anticyclone... shows the pressure getting up near 1038 hPa for a time (would be a new record for my station)

Yes, I can see a rather settled finish for June, with hopefully sunny days like today, here.
Can't see any upper level lows interupting the surface high hPa levels, resulting in any "Dirty High" anticyclonic weather. Frosty weather could be in abundance for next week.
...by the way, there looked as though there were some thunderstorms around Fjordland today

A chance of some lightning around the upper half of the North Island tomorrow as a broad upper level trough moves through. Not a big risk but at least something in this quiet period. The day starts with an early morning front.

More probable in the Hauraki Gulf with that early morning front. But we might get lucky.

I moved to Lyttelton last weekend, although I'm giving up a portion of direct sunshine to the house it's noticeable that the night time temperature is a few degrees warmer than town, which I thought would be possible given the water and being on the hill. I'm also up at about 100m asl. Beautiful misty frost looking down from the tunnel road towards Woolston when I came through this morning.

The reason there is no thunder is because there is not enough moisture, based on k index values.
Upper air is very cold so still be widely scattered showers around though. Been a little bit of lightning in the BOP.
