Thunder on and off here for the last two hours or so, and some pretty good flashes looking towards the city. Fun times.

It certainly is rumbling. Totals must be moving up nicely south of the harbour. On the edge of it here for the moment.....again.

Interesting the thunder was further west while radar shows heaviest rain more east. Really wet out there tonight!

A near record warm July. Christchurch Aero and Dunedin (Musselburgh) recorded their warmest ever July, with some other main centre sites not far behind.

Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'July 2019 National Climate Summary'.

New Zealand’s 2nd-warmest July on record

I think NZ's warmest July was in 1998, also with a national average temp of 9.6C, so there couldn't have been much in it… :-k

Similarly, Musselburgh's average temp this July was apparently just 0.02C shy of its 2013 record.

An information point for future monthlies - Kelburn now has electronic sunshine readings available as well as the manual ones - predictably, in accordance with other site histories, they are significantly higher - by about 48 hours for June & July combined. Might alter the balance in the occasional stupid stories Stuff runs, where they compare cities' and towns' "vital statistics" with no explanation of how they were derived (a lazy recent NIWA effort gave a misleading impression in that respect).
