3cm, very clear hail, super loud roar as the hail approached. Had big chunks dropping randomly before the main fall

Watching NZ281 on flight radar coming in to land from Singapore, got friends on board from the UK, looks like they waiting out the storm circling to the north of the city currently. 🤔

Storm was active just west of here with occasional thunder and lightning observed but the show stayed west of here. We did get brief heavy rain with pea sized hail here.

Modelling was showing a shortwave coming in this evening and it did the trick. Day 3 with storm!
I went for drive west and got the hail at Rosebank Road, 2 to 3cm stones then heavy rain hail mix.

Property damage along the Auckland waterfront due to a wind event in last nights storm. Media are calling it a tornado.

Also an NZ Herald picture of the west Auckland hail, this stone looks 4cm.

it could of started as a waterspout then hit land. it was the second tornado to hit auckland in 2 days. saint heliers got one on sunday. last night might of been a small weak supercell

I'm not surprised at all with the hail size -

The hail roar was really loud, certainly the loudest I've heard. The early stones that were dropping before the main fall I reckon were bigger, I was running around trying to find them - could hear them hitting but couldn't find any in the dark, then the main fall was upon us. May have been a pretty strong updraught to push the hail out of the main fall.

Some photos of the hail on facebook in the area had some that were mostly round with maybe 3 or more layers up towards the Waitakeres, while the stuff that fell on our place in Swanson was pretty clear and jagged with multiple lumps of ice merged. My wife measured one out at 3.3 cm over the length end to end.

Media are saying cars were flipped on the waterfront last night. You need at least 90 knots to topple a car.
170km/h. Probably a waterspout developed out on the upper Waitemata Harbour and drifted into that area.

That upper level trough tonight could certainly produce some flashes/small hail.

Looking at the surrounding harbour PWS obs including the harbour bridge and my own at 10pm last night, there are wind gust spikes but nothing that could cause that damage. Agree with NZstorm, it seems the waterspout starting winding up in the Waitemata harbour before launching into the wharf. Here is a nice shot from NZ Herarld as the vortex kicked off some arcing electrical discharges from powerlines I would assume.

this was the second tornado to hit auckland in 2 days. the first one touched down in saint heliers on sunday. plus the new plymouth tornado. pretty awesome though as we have not had a tornado in auckland for a while. apart from a few non tornadic waterspouts. but the waterspout last night was definatly tornadic

2.30pm water vapour image showing upper level gravity wave disturbances over the NI, as the upper low over the Tasman launches NE towards the NI. Looks a little unstable at the moment.

yes. looks like more thunderstorms and more possible tornadoes. scary how auckland has already gotten 2 tornadoes in two days.
