Re: General September Weather
disapointing only light rain so far. metservice needs to do better forecasting. they updated the risk chart to moderate over nelson and i think they should of removed the moderate risk off auckland but nope they left that there. i dont know why they have moderate risk for auckland. its not very good conditions for thunder here in auckland. certainly good conditions down in the upper south island

Re: General September Weather
I remember a few years ago we had a forum meeting at my place in West Melton and MS had a high risk for thunderstorms for Canterbury which would be appropriate for the meeting, but it didn't even look like it and in 2010 MS had 5 days of high risk for Canterbury Thunderstorms with nothing happening.tornado wrote: ↑Sat 14/09/2019 18:12 disappointing only light rain so far. metservice needs to do better forecasting. they updated the risk chart to moderate over nelson and i thin they should of removed the moderate risk off Auckland but nope they left that there. i don't know why they have moderate risk for Auckland. its not very good conditions for thunder here in Auckland. certainly good conditions down in the upper south island

Re: General September Weather
These complex lows are hard to predict, with such open ridging local convergences can happen anywhere given the right ingrediants and walla convection.
Another one i remember John is September 4th 2012, a low risk day and certainly by all our observations too.
Turned into a high risk and moderate risk severe thunderstorms, with hail the size of golf balls in some areas and an impressive rotating storm.
That day threw us all for a six, who would have thought and 4 days into spring .

Canterbury, home of good rugby and severe storms

Re: General September Weather
Weather looks uninteresting this oncoming week with the ECMWF predicting an intense anticyclone of up to 1040hPa moving over us. With the SSW on another topic, will this produce anticyclonic gloom over us or lovely fine but cold days?

Re: General September Weather
we are at 106mm to date for September, here,up on average and only half way through the month
The big question is will there be enough warmer than average days across the south island over the next 2 weeks to compensate for the cold snap the south island had, to stop this being the first colder than normal month NZ has had overall in like 33 months or something?

Re: General September Weather
Showers, sleety above 400 metres, clearing by evening. Strong westerlies, gradually easing
Something I've never seen mentioned in an Invercargill forecast is any sleet or snow at above specific levels

Re: General September Weather
I shake my head at the wording coming from some of these forecasters and so many times, their icons aren't updated to match the wording. Maybe they don't realise that In,gill is so close to sea level. But I see that Dunedin's forecast doesn't mention 'sleet to 500m'

Re: General September Weather
Iv had a look at the week ahead and i see Tuesday looks a little suspicious for a risk of a hail/ thunderstorm for Canterbury.. cold temperatures at the surface yes but if there is a little heating before midday there might well be something.. interesting anyway

Re: General September Weather
I hope so Mikey, as this SSW has been a bit of a disappointment so far for us guys in Canterbury for September, but then what do the following months have in store? … the future, Oct .Nov and December?

Re: General September Weather
It looked better last night but i think its worth a low risk on the met service outlook tomorrow with the SW.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sun 15/09/2019 21:35 I hope so Mikey, as this SSW has been a bit of a disappointment so far for us guys in Canterbury for September, but then what do the following months have in store? … the future, Oct .Nov and December?

Re: General September Weather
Not looking good for the rest of the week with just uninteresting fine weather for the rest of the week and possibly the month, sadly
Thought there might some 'punch' with this cold front.

Re: General September Weather
What do you put that down to?
Getting some nasty gusts of wind in the last half hour or so.

Re: General September Weather
Would expect that to have indicated significant wind and rain in the tops.
Wind has risen here in the past ten minutes, sounds quite gusty at times.

Thought there might have been smoke from Australian bush fires down your way.
9.6mm of spillover rain overnight along with horrible gusty winds

Re: General September Weather
I still think we will see a few nice clouds about today. Even a thunderstorm brushing the coastal banks peninsula

Re: General September Weather
Reports from Facebook of thunder and lightning in areas just to north of Chch last evening. I saw a brief flash to the nortwest from Akaroa at about the same time. Might've been something other than lightning, but how far can lightning be seen from where it strikes? (no rain or even much cloud out here then)
