WOW!
slippery when wet!
LOL!
i feel sorry for all in that area
(i have a sister and good friend in that area (whakatane and east of Ohope (he is going to have to sell some of his dairy cows as so much of his farm now has slips on it....(and he had to walk for 2 miles to get back to farm as the roads were closed))
man, what a year for floods
who is going to get hit next!
blame it on global warming, or the weather not knowing if its el nino or la nina?

But then its dry in Australia,Western USA ,so the rain balances itself out around the world and we get SW 80% of the year then other places get hardly much wind the same %

Thanks for the link Pete.
It is extraordinary that Earthquakes occur around the time of such a flood. The ground would be unstable with all that rain.
I think there was nothing unusual about the weather situation over the weekend. It was just bad luck that a slowly forming low out to the east of the North Island stalled the movement of the active front over the BOP.
That region is so exposed to the north. There also tends to be convective enhancement in fronts over the BOP ocean area, and this was feeding a conveyor belt of rain into the region.

yes, i agree with those statements steven
my sister said the lights were swinging in some of them
all that water will add alot of weight to the ground surface...water is very heavy!
it could be worked out how much extra weight there is....
and to think all that water came out of the atmoshere! (i.e from the oceans orginaly)

Initial estimates are that around 2000 hectares of farmland and 200 hectares of orchards had been affected by the floods.
Fonterra field officer Barry Keane who is part of the flood coordination team says hundreds of farms remain under metres of water.
And yesterday flood water continued to pour across the lower Rangitaiki Plain from a breach in the flood banks near Edgecumbe.
Mr Keane says farmers were working to move all of the stock that were under threat from rising flood waters last night.
Barry Keane says farmers have been inundated with offers of grazing for stock.
However, today the spotlight will be on those cows that are being milked.
Fonterra says flooding has cut off access to 49 dairy farmers in the Bay of Plenty who are supplying winter milk and colostrum. Tankers were not able to reach those farms yesterday.
Fonterra's dairy factory at Edgecumbe has also been flooded but it is closed for processing and is not due to reopen until the end of the month.
Farmer representatives will meet the local council this morning to assess progress.

That must explain why we get tides.Manukau heads observer wrote: ...and to think all that water came out of the atmoshere! (i.e from the oceans orginaly)
Every time it rains heavily somewhere, the tides goes out, and comes back in as the water drains back into the ocean!

Sorry. Couldn't resist

humm, but you missed my point.,....
i.e take a large CB cloud
you might get 20mm fall from it....
thats 20mm over the whole ground surface...
and that CB might be quite a few km wide...
you add up all the water,.....and it all originated as a gaseous state...in the atmosphere.....but, that moisture was drawn in from surrounding areas,,....so my point was that all the rain in the BOP came from the fact there was a conveyor belt of moist air moving south over the vast pacific ocean
next statement to make you guys think:
it seem that you get major trough developments along the line of the kermadec trench....i.e might be related that sudden change in sea depth/enery/temperature of the ocean.....i mean that oceans are a big part of the climate feedback system...
anyway, just me rambling again!
