EC currently projecting mid 40's in Melbourne on the first day of the Australian Tennis Open which goes well into the evening with a gusty north westerly. Ominous fire danger conditions for SE OZ in a week or so.

Amazing there, Will ...and all we get here is clag, (notice how I have re-spelt the word clagg as from the R. Wood's post)
Had the heat pump on the other night as I was feeling quite cold. Wierd.

Wow, that had me by surprise. momentary thought: "Did Will move away from Darwin?". Despite my trying to wind Cam up posts in another media, I do actually hope it comes right up there soon.

How is Darwin River Dam holding up?

Yep, record for Adelaide. Another BoM site in the metro areas at Roseworthy just hit 48.1c I think making it the highest maximum city temp in Australian history. Old one was Avalon at 47.9c in Melbourne.

49.5 at Port Augusta - new record there.

The 46.6 at Adelaide means it's become the hottest recorded temperature for an Australian capital beating Melbourne's 46.4 on Black Saturday, 2009.
How is Darwin River Dam holding up?
74% capacity versus 81% this time last year so not doing that bad. Second highest for a capital after Hobart. ;)

Green as everywhere here.

How hot did Adelaide get? Still showing 46.7C now on the NZ MetService link. Sure I saw it go over 47 a couple hours ago.

I think the MS link for Adelaide is for Kent Town (east side), which reached 47.7C this arvo, beating its previous all-time record of 45.7C in Jan 2009, since records began in 1977.

The 46.6C today is for Adelaide's older West Terrace site (west side), beating its previous all-time record of 46.1C in Jan 1939, since records began in 1887.

Monsoon is arriving with the mother of all convergence zones according to EC and the UK for FNQ and North Queensland. EC going for around 1.5 metres and the UK going for 2.5 metres in the next 6 days in certain spots  UK is projecting a tropical cyclone outer band as the culprit.

Areas around Townsville are anywhere from 400 to 800mm so far but its still on going with the convergence zone anchored and not going anywhere soon. Going to be some biblical totals a week from now

Golf ball hail in Sydney yesterday.

Sydney sounding shows surface to 500mb bulk shear above 40knots. So supercell.

Quite a continued dreadful outlook for pretty much all of Australia with the positive Indian Ocean Dipole having a big effect as well as the negative SAM giving Australia a double whammy.

The BoM wrote yesterday:
Climate outlook overview

Issued: 12 September 2019
  • Rainfall is likely to be below average across most of the country for the remainder of 2019 and early 2020. However, for northwest WA, above average rainfall is likely through the November to January period.
  • Daytime temperatures are very likely to be above average over the Australian mainland and eastern Tasmania during the October to January period.
  • A warm spell is expected during the second half of September, with maximum temperatures likely to be 2-3 degrees above average for much of the southern two-thirds of mainland Australia.
  • Nights are likely to be cooler than average in parts of southeast Australia and the Top End of the NT during October. Nights are very likely to be warmer than average over eastern NSW, southern Queensland, the eastern NT and most of WA.
  • The positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) remains a key climate driver of Australian climate for the coming months. A prolonged period of negative SAM (Southern Annular Mode) is also forecast, which at this time of the year typically acts to enhance the drier signal across parts of eastern Australia.
Bushfire hell:

The wet season here in the Top End is due to start October 1, but I've never seen the preceeding conditions so bad before.

Every night is cool at the moment, (July like even?) thanks to cool sea surface temperatures around N Australia and Indonesia. Not good for sustained October and November storm development as we explicitly need dewpoint temperatures above 23/24C for thunderstorm development along the tropical coast.

The Indian Ocean Dipole might be the strongest yet on record in a positive phase:

Just 24C SSTs off Sumatra...

22.2C here this morning and 21.8C yesterday morning versus 24.9C average so still the SSTs are very cool.

BoM due to update ENSO wrap up today.
