A massive tornado that tore through one of Ohio's largest cities Monday night leveled homes and entire apartment complexes and knocked out power and water to tens of thousands of people.
The devastating twister, rated by the National Weather Service as at least an EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, struck Dayton, Ohio, which has a population of more than 140,000, carving out a hopscotching path of damage that left people scrambling for their lives...

Looks like a massive rain-wrapped tornado just went through Bonner Springs, Kansas within the last hour. Seems to have just missed much of the Kansas City metro area.

A couple of wedges

Unread post by tgsnoopy »

This first Wedge Tornado we stopped in a position to watch it cross the highway in front of us. It turned right and came at us. I think my actual words were "Guys, we are too close, this tornado is getting bigger, not moving right enough." We had passed several trucks getting in to position. From the high vantage point truck drivers could see the rather large hail guard on the vehicle & with the large aerial and Stormchaser plate they chose to stop when they saw us stopped taking photo's. We were able to U turn and leave just in time (these storms were really moving), the truck drivers unfortunately had no chance. We returned immediately after the tornado crossed the road to check on the drivers, all ok.

The second one was barely visible through trees on approach, not able to get usable photo's and video. The initial circulation we saw was wide and multi vortex, When we finally got a good look it was a solid wedge. Tom later got two tornadoes on the ground from this supercell, but I was on the other side of the car & could barely get a glimpse and got no photos. I may add other photo's later.

Our chasing has concluded, I'm now in Chicago and fly home tonight.

As far as Tornadoes go, May 2019 was 3rd in max no of twisters. Behind 2003 and the leader 2011. Fortunately only 7 deaths, but we may see more today.

Not sure if this got bought up here, but...
Roger Hill from Silver Lining Tours in Facebook wrote: As many of you are aware, we had a very unfortunate incident happen last night. While chasing the Lawrence, KS tornadic supercell, we were hit with a rain wrapped satellite tornado 2 miles southeast of the parent circulation. Two vans were rolled resulting in a few minor injuries. If you understand severe weather you will know these satellite tornadoes can not be predicted. Keeping that in mind, we kept ourselves 2 miles southeast of the main circulation that hadn’t formed a tornado yet. We could see the wall cloud off to our northwest and decided to drop back south to highway 59 where we were going to continue our chase east. One mile south of where we turned around is where we encountered the rain wrapped satellite. Two of our vans were not effected. With any luck at all and if there had been any more space in between the vans, there wouldn’t be a need to write this today as the small tornado would have passed in between us. Roger and Caryn GREATLY appreciate the outpouring of private messages and phone calls. We still do consider ourselves careful chasers as our safety record proves that. Let this serve to ALL chasers as a reminder that it CAN happen to you. STAY SAFE!!!
Pleased no one was seriously hurt or worse. One van was beside road, the other a small distance away in a paddock beside the road. This can happen to any of us & Roger is one of if not the best at what he does.

Great video there, whilst the strong inflow was pulling water droplets off leaves etc which were visible in the inflow, I don't see any rotation at the time. Doubt it could be classified as a tornado. Tornado is essentially defined as a rotating funnel cloud with confirmed associated ground circulation.

Active in chase alley today. Dryline storms through west and an outflow boundary north Texas.

Anvils blowing off in upper flow indicates these storms likely to be severe.

And Reed trimmer sucessfully launched a rocket into the EF4 that we were on in Kansas (same one that tipped over Roger Hill/Silver Lining Tours van).

A violent EF-4 tornado was approaching densely populated Dayton. Yet, numerous people were calling the station to complain about missing The Bachelorette. TV meteorologist gets stroppy.

I described Roger Hill from Silver Lining Tours as "One of the best if not the best". Sadly he has been feeling a lot of heat over the incident where some of the people in his tour vans received minor injuries in an almost impossible to predict incident. This article is worth a read on the topic and contains useful links.

https://davieswx.blogspot.com/2019/06/r ... tours.html

Interesting they are going to be more careful with HP (High Precipitation) events in the future. Personally I think they were acting in a safe manner and were far enough away that they should have been safe, don't feel they need to make any changes.

I'm far more concerned with chaser convergences and the road hazard they create blocking an escape should something change in an unpredictable manner. A storm in the vicinity of the Colorado/Kansas border had the worse string of chasers I've ever seen. There was a car off the right hand side of the road, presumably a swerve to avoid a nose to tail, not far in front of that was a nose to tail accident. Interestingly the magnetic decals were quickly removed from the vehicle that hit from behind before nearby police attended. A little earlier a well known (from down under) chaser who had recently chastised other chasers driving, was seen moving off from his position (facing the wrong way on the left), driving the wrong way down the left to speed match vehicles on the right before finding a gap, indicating and quite effectively forcing his way into the string of traffic. We later saw another chaser barge pass us (up the inside on the wrong side) during a safe left hand turn we were making, who then forced his way in front of us, to then wander all over the place slowing everyone behind him as he looked at radar whilst driving. We weren't impressed and many passed him as they could safely, we subsequently narrowly escaped really big hail and many behind us would have been caught up in it because of that person.

Statistics tell the story. Few chasers killed by storms. Many killed on the roads getting to and from storms. I'm in favour of significant penalties for drivers being distracted whilst driving. Storm chasers should drive only, pull over & look if you are on your own. I'm pleased the team I'v been participating in has a driver that drives, will not get distracted, trusts the Meteorologist in the team and we are all proactive looking for road hazards and other vehicles at intersections as well. One team member is also very proactive with Navigation/Road options for escape routes. Sadly the drivers new 2019 Ford Expedition (Platinum Max) got hail damage in the incident described above, but it could have been a lot worse.

Daniel Shaw (severestorms.com.au from Sydney) has had a strong storm impact his chase vehicle today.

Damage Update:
Headed to Amarillo, TX for the night

Basic Damage Report
- Windshield Lost
- Rear Window Shattered.
- Rear left window shattered.
- 2x Blackcat Mobile antennas destroyed.
- 2x XM Sat Antennas shredded. (disappeared)
- GPS/MIMO Dome antenna destroyed.
- Left side mirror smashed
- Hail guard has holes in it.
- Both rear taillights (additional damage)
- Rear flange (rail) cracked
- Rear GoPro mount, disappeared. (GoPro found)
- Roof rack right rear tail mount cracked (non-structural)

Car still drives perfectly, so once the glass is replaced the rest we can fix the rest with tape and film and perhaps a heap of epoxy.

Patreons will be sent a private link of the incar video hopefully later this evening. (Still driving to Amarillo)

Approximately $1300.00 US in replacement parts needed. $1885.00 AUD

Thank you to the one person who donated $20.00 today. But a massive thank you to the Patreons for really helping me.

I have always wanted to core a real storm that was not a tornado threat. This was a "Real Storm"

YouTube was not possible today, so a public stream was the only option so paid supporters and public could access the stream.

I have recorded a video showing the damage. This will be available to Patreons only. (to be released as soon as possible)

Hope to have YouTube available tomorrow, but glass replacement is a priority.
