Alexandra

Unread post by jrj »

There are 42 locations listed on the MetService forecast list. Four of them do not have weather stations: Dargaville, Tokoroa, Reefton and Greymouth, so do not feature on the new excellent "Yesterday's Weather" list.
There are 39 locations on the "Yesterday's Weather" list. One of them is Alexandra - why no acknowledgement or forecast?
Any ideas?

Yes. I looked up Alexandra on the forecast list as I, with a few others, are doing the Central Otago Rail Trail next week. Nothing there?

Under the rural forcast for Central otago there is a 10 day rain and temperture forcast for Alexandra But only the first 4 days are reasonably accurate. As for actual conditions there is no forcast of weather conditions for Alexandra itself but there is for Central otago as a region.

Aaah, found it. The readings for Alexandra on the list are those from Roxburgh, just as the readings for Dannevirke are actually those from the Takapau Plains station (actually closer to Waipukurau). Still a bit odd. :)

Big diffence of Dannevirk to Takapau plains, the T.P has bigger extremes especially spring/early summer and they have less cloud from the west as Dannevirke gets than, liken woodville a little more like Dannevirke though woodville is a very windy place like Palmerston nth.

There's no reason why there should not be a forecast for Alexandra - there's a full manual station there. Furthermore, Dannevirke has both a manual site and an EWS!

Dannevirke is drier and sunnier than Woodville but rainier than the Takapau Plains and southern HB.

There are MANY MANY manual stations around the country. Because there's one there doesn't necessarily mean there will be a forecast for that area.

Manual stations are more for logging weather information for historical purposes, rather than forcasting. Most manual stations only send in their data once a month. Here at the Invercargill station, our data goes in monthly, but most goes in daily as well into the MetService, Metra and NIWA systems.

As Alexandra is the primary population centre of Central, I don't find your point to be very compelling.
