Funnel Cloud over Akld
Hi folks,
There shouldn't be much happen in the Auckland area today due to subsidence aloft (warming aloft) which is only allowing quite shallow convection. The deepest instability (similar that in the Auckland area yesterday) is up over northern Northland.

Re: Funnel Cloud over Akld
A Funnel cloud can occur in very shallow instability but the stronger covergence today was out to the east of the city, a SW breeze pushing through, a dry day across the region

Re: Funnel Cloud over Akld
The ingredients present yesterday were:
- Cloud depth to about 4-5kms (as NZStorm mentioned).
- Very bouyant sounding in the lower part of the cloud - generates a strong updraft.
- Triggered by afternoon heating on the sea breeze convergence over Auckland (westerlies meeting easterlies).
Some local topography probably induced some curvature in the winds on the convergence and with the lift into the cloud, the funnel gets set up by the strong low level updraft.
These conditions were not present today.

Re: Funnel Cloud over Akld
The instability cleared out this morning. Back into summer now with a big warm up aloft.
Another photo of the funnel as seen from Grey Lynn.

Re: Funnel Cloud over Akld
personally I think the media should have quoted a better explanation than what was presented for what caused yesterday's funnel
Your explanation Paul is what was needed
just my opinion
I see Phillip is trying to beat up the conditions to justify his moderate prediction of another funnel cloud?
http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/a ... r-upper-ni
good he though points out the chances of getting 2 in a row is not great
agree with that....no 2 days are ever exactly the same for ingredients!

Remember N.Z Storm saying last week it was ripe for such weather above too.(cold air above)

Yes, cold air is a good predictor for landspouts/waterspouts, particularly at this time of year with the surface environment being so warm.Remember N.Z Storm saying last week it was ripe for such weather above too.(cold air above)

Re: Funnel Cloud over Akld
wow, no, had not see that one
great shot that!
really shows the amount of rotation.....which to me shows how " under rated" funnels clouds are

Over Mangere Mnt so the funnel cloud was a little further west than I thought.jamie.haultain wrote:found this on metservice pic of the week. most of you have probably already seen it but my word its a nice picturehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/metservice-nz/5535728912/
May have been a Landspout or waterspout, the visible funnel was well down

Re: Funnel Cloud over Akld
In the high plains of USA they get quite powerful landspouts, up to F2 but ofcoarse there is massive instability there.really shows the amount of rotation.....which to me shows how " under rated" funnels clouds are
In this country the instability values are generally too low for spouts to come to much.

Yes, noticed that. MetVUW also have a nice shot looking N from the airport on their current homepage and another saying, 'approximately over Greenlane' here.spwill wrote:Over Mangere Mnt so the funnel cloud was a little further west than I thought.jamie.haultain wrote:found this on metservice pic of the week. most of you have probably already seen it but my word its a nice picturehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/metservice-nz/5535728912/

Re: Funnel Cloud over Akld
Those photos certainly suggest it may have touched down, very low anyways! i wonder what kind of winds that would pick up if it had touched down?
