Re: General July Weather
Looks like there could be a potential polar blast next Sunday with GFS showing isobars coming straight up from the Antartic. Looks a little to WSW at this point in time but Southland and Southern Otago regions could be exposed.

Re: General August Weather
Well that cold blast showing in a week has disappeared as soon as it eventuated. Hardly surprising though. Looks to be very boring weather for the first 10 days and with ECMWF showing a strengthening high then even the first 2 weeks look incredibly lull! Maybe the 2nd part of August will pack a punch.

Re: General August Weather
Certainly wasn't springlike here, 3C min overnight and a max of 12.5C this afternoon with quite a lot of ominous looking cloud cover. Clearing up during the last hour.

Re: General August Weather
The Access model always seems to over-exaggerate low pressure systems. But it does look like a fairly large low to affect NZ according to GFS

Re: General August Weather
Pea soup about this morning with a frost also. -2 currently. Should be another stunner of a day! GFS bringing back that potential blast of snow to low levels over Southland and Southern Otago again with Canterbury protected due to WSW flow. Certainly not looking anything like what the weatherzone site model was showing though.
Raining with -0.5 the temp? Thought that would constitute snow?snowstormwatcher wrote:Had clear skies here and -3 degrees at 6am, Now its raining lightly from the Northwest and -0.5 degrees, Roads going to be very icy.

Re: General August Weather
Yes normally it would but the upper air is quite warm (Canterbury high country freezing level is 2000m), Only the first 50 meters or so of the aptmosthere is below freezing due to the frost, The rain doesnt have enough time to freeze and turn to snow in such a shallow layer of freezing air. well thats the way I see it anyway I could be wrong though.CHCH Weather Chaser wrote:Raining with -0.5 the temp? Re: General August Weather
Yawn at this weather. As nice as it is to dry out, it sucks when its still and dry but there is no sun. This must be how the UK people feel in winter.

Re: General August Weather
Plenty of sunshine here since Sunday but on the cool side.
Dry this week but the wet season returns next week.
Some wintry weather for SW NZ Sat night/Sun, snow for Queenstown.
A Tasman Low next week is perhaps something to watch for inland snow SI

Nice and foggy here this morning, fairly cool too. Makes your face cold very fast when walking outside.
