Very Active Front, Upper N.I. - Sep 19
Looking ahead to tomorrows (Mondays) system, there is an area of lightning in the southwest Tasman now. This system develops a warm sector which means there will be a tornado risk with it! Looks like a thunder risk from Taranaki northward with 13-14c dewpoints onto Northland as far south as Auckland in the afternoon. GFS has been showing some quite good instability numbers over Northland with the more humid air there. Have to see how this system develops.

Metservice have tomorrow afternoon's main instability slightly further north in this evenings update, high risk Northland, low risk for all of Auckland

That band of muck-n-guck heading toward the NI looks to be NASTY...has just been growing and growing with each radar pass!

Metservice better be looking at the velocity scans as this comes in, these types of active fronts have the potential to put down tornadoes.
Also of note my boltek and others in the NI are detecting a large proportion of CG's which is the lightning type that poses the most danger.

bugger it for being so far north. lightning is only going to hit west coast north of Kaipara harbour entrance and thats it!
1450 strikes in the past 2 hours. not a bad count hahaha.

This line has a good outflow boundary or gust front with it, take pictures when it comes in it should show some good structure
The outflow boundary is the first small line before the actual front.
I wont be surprised if the gusts when it comes in exceed 90km/hr....

Looks like about Dargaville north for the big lightning show, perhaps some storms can fire down our way as the front moves over warmed land.

Re: Very Active Front, Upper N.I. - Sep 19
I see MetService updated their Severe Thunderstorm Watch not long ago. Earlier this morn it was just for the Far North, but now includes a high risk of squally thunderstorms with the risk of one or two damaging tornadoes extending all the way down to northern Auckland for this arvo.

Stuck in the office here in Takapuna *sigh* Looks pretty dark to the north but so far no action that is visible/audible through the walls of the building.

Re: Very Active Front, Upper N.I. - Sep 19
Front has arrived here, gentle light rain. Maybe would have been more interesting if we had reached 17 or 18 degrees today?
