Been dry in Christchurch, Ashburton and Timaru this month and probably a few other places too.
We have had a few spots of rain today but not enough to tip the
gauge yet. I've only recorded 5.6mm so far this month, the last rainfall recorded was 3.2mm on the 10th.
From Stuffs weather page (http://www.stuff.co.nz/weather.html) Totals so far are:
Timaru: 12.6mm
Ashburton: 5.6mm
Christchurch: 5.6mm
The media don't seem to be reporting the conditions was causing any problems for the rural community.
There doesn't seem to be much rain forecast for tomorrow and Monday could bring some more.
My records only go back to 2000
June 2000: 58.3mm
June 2001: 35.2mm
June 2002: 115.2mm
Who else has had dry June so far?
(having written this it will probably tip it down now! )

As at today, Saturday, the total for Chch Botanic Gardens is 5.6mm, which would place us third driest (since 1864), about a 45 year return period.
Up till Thursday sunshine hours for the last 30 days are 33% above normal. Temperatures for Chch are +1.8 deg for the last 30 days, but only +0.7 deg for the last 10 days, and that will doubtless come down further as Friday and todays readings are added in. In Timaru the comparison is even stronger, +1.5 deg for the last 30 days, yet only +0.1 for the last 10 days.
Also of interest is Rangiora, which is on 19mm for the last 60 days, which is only 18% of average, and drier than any 60 day period through the droughty summer.
The 10 driest Junes (Botanic Gardens) in order are:
1959 6 3.8mm
1942 6 3.9mm
1979 6 9.1mm
1985 6 10.9mm
1899 6 11mm
1964 6 13.5mm
1984 6 14.7mm
1900 6 14.8mm
1917 6 17mm
1884 6 17.1mm

Thanks for those numbers Tony. The lack of rain is probably not too noticeable with the low evaporation at this time of year and farmers are not expecting much grass growth. I'm sure it will add to the rainfall deficit for the year.
So far this year, 239.2mm this year compared to 491.4mm to the same time last year.
