Re: General February Weather
Thats good because i sick of this gloom weve been having down here,at least this gloom is producing drizzle this morning as its really starting to get dry around here.

The overcast is a little higher here this morning, however mist seems to be encroaching again - visibility 500m.

(Expecting mushrooms etc. to pop up very soon at this rate.)

Already got mushrooms poping up here.Richard wrote:oh yes thats one good thing about this weather lately at least.Orion wrote: (Expecting mushrooms etc. to pop up very soon at this rate.)
This has to be one of the greenest summers ive seen here, Havent had a huge amount of rain but the lack of NW conditons is keeping the moisture in the ground a lot longer.
Sadly another overcast morning here Hoping for some fine breaks this afternoon.

Re: General February Weather
How nice it was to feel the sunshine when i left for work this morning, feel like weve been in hibernation wrapped in a grey gloomy blanket for days on end.
Looking forward to some warmer temps these next few days and some quicker moving NW/SW systems.
Forgot to report 7mm of thick drizzle from last friday and 4mm of rain from Tuesdays scraps, very green snowstormwatcher here too the fruit industry is struggling a little bit out east but i would imagine places like central otago would benefit from such weather.

Re: General February Weather
Yes nice to see the sun today, however still running way below normal for day time highs here for February. Just looking back so far for the month in this area (and most of CHCH no doubt) just one day over 21 degrees which was on the 1st February. The mean temperature is running at 2.7 degrees colder on comparison to last Feb. One of the cloudiest summers I can remember here in a long time and such a lack of NW its unbelievable. Yet to break the 30 mark which was surpassed many a time last season. Like snowstormwatcher said, the moisture has stayed in the ground due to the lack of warmer NW days and lack of sunshine, as opposed to rain as just 7mm recorded here for the month of February so far. Looks like a mixed bag over the next 7 or so days with N-NW winds possibly developing in a few days but also looks to be periods of drizzle/light rain on the cards as well in the next week.

Re: General February Weather
Perfect looking morning in Auckland, another 25C day on the way with a light SW.
Tomorrow (Monday) the flow turns NE for Auckland so a convergence shower or two.
The passage of a shortwave Monday afternoon and surface convergence should lead to some afternoon showers for inland North Island. Maybe isolated thunderstorms too.
Amazing looking devil.

Re: General February Weather
That is a good example of a dust devil, was probably a hot day, the dry sun baked ground tends to be an ingredient.
A beautiful morning here, currently, 21C, dp 18C.

Re: General February Weather
The main afternoon convergence cloud was well east of the city thanks to the SW breeze. Beaches were packed today, I spent the afternoon at Piha, super nice weather over there, the sea was warm.

Re: General February Weather
The SAM is now in a negative phase for the first time since November, means there should be more westerly in the general weather pattern.

Re: General February Weather
Probably the only path back to getting some more sun. Still a real chance of W'gton getting its cloudiest ever summer (105 years of city records). We need 149 hours in February to match 1952-53's tally of 537. Total to 18th Feb is 95 hours - yesterday was mainly overcast, same today so far. Some better hope of reasonable sun in the last 6 days of the month. If the end result is close, leap year adjustment may see the record broken anyway.spwill wrote:The SAM is now in a negative phase for the first time since November, means there should be more westerly in the general weather pattern.

Re: General February Weather
A very pleasant day here: sunshine again after dull and drizzly weekend, and currently 23.3 degrees, after 5.3 degrees at 7am (pretty brisk!).
Calm at times through the day, just now a gentle southeast breeze.
60% humidity.

Re: General February Weather
A return to sunshine again after a gloomy day yesterday and some nice CU inland along the foothills and slightly east of them, looking SW coming home i could see some nice turkey towers going up.
I am a little confused with MS though on the rural forecast it has canterbury, otago, southland for heavy showers and thunderstorms tomorrow yet when i look at the thunder outlook maps theres nothing over canterbury .
It does look like the lighter winds will be further south tomorrow with a more northerly flow from about mid canterbury northwards.
Some models plotting the low mid week to cross the south island and deepen to the east to around 995hpa, so come Friday mid afternoon might be a chance for something thundery although there will be cloud cover beforehand something to watch anyway.
And then again on Saturday afternoon a southerly chaser comes up the island.
