Re: General July Weather
Looks like the coast is getting a drenching right now and yes many places are up to that 450mm mark now.
Arthurs pass on 212mm.
Many rivers have gone over there flood warning trigger with the buller at 11.3m with a trigger of 7.2m.

Overcast and mild with a steady amount of rain falling (6.40mm), Its a relief not to wake up to a cold morning.

Re: General July Weather
State 6 from here to Wesport is closed due to flooding.. all access to Westport is closed actually.
The recently cleaned out Raleigh Creek running through Runanga here, held up well, some of the heaviest rain I have seen yet fell from midnight onwards, pushing my totals to the 500mm mark, so very good call on the totals if nothing else. We dodged a big bullet here, it would have been flood #3 if not for the work done. Amazing what people power can do
Hope the guys up the road in Westport will be ok, the Buller is closing in on the magic 11.7m mark, but the tide is outgoing, so that might be their own saving grace.

Re: General July Weather
Yes good picture on the stuff website of the flooding of the Buller River. I happened to be with relatives last year at Christmas when the Buller River did the same thing to that swing. However, last time was more due to the rain in the ranges, this time a combination of both. Relatives there said road was under this morning and the lawn wasnt visible.

Here on the other side of the alps it is a totally different story (as youd expect) with 21 degrees at the airport!!
Updated: Now 22. What is the warmest July Temperature for Christchurch anyone?

My own station has just reached 20.2°C, easily breaking its previous July record of 18.2°C set on the 25th in 2007 (for the last 10 years).

Wow! If thats the case we have a new record with 22.2 at airport at the moment. However as of half an hour ago here we have had an unexpected southerly change here with low cloud rolling in and a dive in temp!

Yes. Temperature dropping away now with that southerly coming through.
Cloud increasing to the SW although not harmful or what ever.

22C at Christchurch airport, amazing for July!
With an El Nino in the offering you may see a lot of those temps in spring.

I see Chch Gardens also recorded 21.5C that day. It's normally a little warmer than the airport, so it'll be interesting to see what it recorded today. Its highest July temp is 22.9C, recorded on July 31, 1967, while the airport was considerably less with 20.8C that day.

Re: General July Weather
Unseasonably warm out on BP this afternoon, but about an hour ago we had some quite heavy rain for a time. Radar shows the band affecting southern BP, but missing Chch.

The last El Nino Spring in 2009 gave a near record cold October, however August was the warmest on record.NZstorm wrote:

We have had over 24 hours of continous rain now. over 36mm now so it hasnt been heavy but more consistant. Looks like the radar shows we could get another 20mm??? before it finishes.

Re: General July Weather
can anyone explain the strange showers on the radar just to the west of kaipara harbour. Ive watched them thismorning and intialy it looked like a heavy band of rain embedded in the front. The front has now left it behind and now the heavy beand has formed more discrete cells rather than the heavy band it was. It seems to be moving much slower than the front.

33mm of steady light rain here so far since early yesterday morn.
See what you mean Jamie. Shows up better on WeatherZone's imagery. Looks like a line of 4 distinct sausage-shaped cells.

Re: General July Weather
Another 20 degree day here and currently 19.1°C at the airport. Yesterday's maximum there is showing as 22.4°C on Metservice...
If it was a summer's day, I wonder how hot would it be here, 40+ ? Probably not that simple of course.
