A great storm at Hampton Downs but not a photogenic storm. Great thunder/lightning with a burst of intense wind and rain with hail mostly around 1cm but some larger stones up to 2cm. Some photos.

Looked too good to miss  .We don't often see storms with a land track from west coast of Waikato to east coast BOP in Winter.

Looks to have had some very nice rotation judging from the satellite loops.

There is another rotator on its way towards the west coast right now.

I did not notice that it had a nice little low associated with that last CB line, you are right
no wonder we had 55 knots gusts here...as that small low passed to our south

I chased the Waikato storm as well this morning. Just 30mins down the motorway, was a good storm. Some decent hail.
I notice looking at the gfs the 500mb flow was W 45kts, surface flow was NW 10kts, so a bit of shear with the storm.

A massive mushroom shaped CB has developed out in cook strait to the south of Wellington. Just starting to show on the rain radar. Hoping a light southerly will kick in and blow it our way!

Just heard from someone in the Lower North Island beaut storm coming in there loads of thunder and lightning, looks like this is the one that was lingering out in Cook Strait as you say.
Another cell further up the coast near Porirua with lightning too.
Edit: there was a storm warning for wellington but has now been taken down off MS, as it has since died off.
But check out these photos of the storm, good to see others out there taking photos even if they are average joe public.
Love the photo of 3 CG's at once, i dont think ive ever seen that with my own eyes for storms in Canterbury before, normally get sheet lightning and one CG at once.

most likely done with time delay on the camera ,i.e they would not have all been at the same time
(you can tell by the lighting)
nice photo :)

I flew from Wellington to ChCh last night at 17.35 and saw that blowing up. Was not suprised to hear the hail reports from family in Miramar when I got home.
