Just got home from chase E/SE Auckland (rural outskirts as well).

Had two hours of great CG's, lots of hail/heavy rain. Had some close strikes as well!

Chased a really great storm in North Waikato early evening, the thunder and lightning was continuous, heavy hail, a winter like scene was created.
Some photos of the hail

For Central and south Waikato, yes the setup was a bust. First of all, we had a cold southerly moderating the SFC temp and keeping DP's low. 2nd The seabreeze didnt come in at all. 3rd the mid level cloud didnt clear completely.

But it was bust that forecasters couldnt have predicted as it was a combination of factors that looked favorable in the forecast but did come true.

Oh well, we still have rest of Summer to come :)

We got a cell come thru around 5:30pm, was watching on my IP cam (cos it's 15m higher than me!) had a few CG's.
Thought I was recording it as well but it seems the software doesn't like Win8

I certainly wondered if it was a wall cloud when I looked closely at the pic. Great photo.

Really beautiful sunset has just faded. Lots of big, bright pink clouds to my South East.

photos from top of bombay hills
all developed explosively
wall cloud and then funnel cloud developed like in minutes!
you can visibly see the clouds developing and moving rapidly!
saw lots of CG's too
stoked

SPwill, where abouts in the north waikato were you?
as Ricky and I were there too , but we were west of the line, watching it go up

Sorry I missed you guys, I had no phone with me and my internet connection kept drpping out.
I went to Macdonalds at Bombay around 4.30pm to use their internet but they had no power. I drove south to Te Kauwhata with the big Cb towers going up to the east with distant lightning so went east at Te Kauwhata to meet the storms.

A couple of photos, Waikato Cb towers and storms clouds along the southern motorway

It was a busy and interesting afternoon. Because there wasn't much shear in the environment, these cells would go up and within about 3 radar scans would weaken just as they were crossing the severe mark (in terms of rainfall). Many cells produced somewhere between 15-25mm of rain then died. Many also produced 10 to 15mm hail with one or two exceptions where they may have topped 20mm. And of course cell motions were fairly slow - often in the 10-15km/hr range.
Great reports during the event by the way. Often these are quite useful.

certainly was explosive development at times...developed incredibly quickly over the Bombay area when I was there...which was the tail end charlie at that time (that tail end kept on propogating south to eventualy link up with an anchoring storm over huntly area

As sometimes turns out I, had a day of multiple jobs, between Katikati and Opotiki where I ended up at 6pm last night. At no stage did I see anything interesting on my travels, barely had any rain at all. Glad you guys got a show out of it.

My theory, if it's showing in the models for a bit in advance it often ends up in a bit different a spot to they predict. It's the Kaimai Force Field that directs them away from us in that scenario ;)

Our best storms here are the ones that come up without much warning in my experience.
