Lake Sumner cloud

Unread post by Richard »

Firstly, sorry about the quality of the photo,i was taking the wife to work this morning and she wouldn't let me stop just to take a photo of 'a cloud',so she took it through the windscreen of the car.
ive always been fascinated by this cloud which appears often over the same mountain when there is a NW airsteam over the South island and only forms either when the wind flow is light or when the NW wind first devolopes, lake Sumner is on the other side of the mountain in the photo and the Hurunui river flows out from the lake through the gap in the middle.I think this cloud forms because of evaporation off the lake which is picked up by the NW and forms as it lifts over the mountain range.
Would be neat if Lacertae could do one of his time laps of this cloud, the second photo taken half an hour later.

Very interesting, and good observation _b
I'd be interested to see and know more about this cloud-formation.
Compliments to the photographer

Interesting indeed.
And I'd love to do a time-lapse if I could be sure my car wouldn't die on the way ... kinda not fit for purpose at the moment ... :-S

Thats the only explanation i could think of that forms it.
As a kid living in Rangiora i used to notice the cloud but it appeared to the north instead.

It looks like a localizing effect there causing that cloud.
There are alot of localized cloud effects world wide from weather related instances, a number having local names. I can't think off hand to any, but areas that have mountains and valleys would have instances of a particular cloud formation from their position to weather situations.
I just thought, Cape Town has it's "Tablecloth" and MtEgmont in Taranaki quite often has it's "Flag"

Ive thought for years John that this cloud formation needs its own name, maybe the name for the mountain it forms over the top of?,i'll try and find its name.
