Temperature up to 21.9 degrees, sun coming out occasionally, still the odd spot of light rain.

South Island Thunderstorms 30th December
In Timaru on holiday and looking to the north and the sky is black as. Can hear regular rumbles of thunder but looks like it will slide out to sea to the north of us.

South Island Thunderstorms 30th December
Southerly has just kicked thru Timaru in last 2 mins. Strong wind, and significant temperature drop. Brrrrrr!! No rain associated with the wind change though.

Re: South Island Thunderstorms 30th December
Yes that is dedication when you spend 13 hours on the road and not too much to show for it, we hit close to those storms near Waimate around 3pm but the terrain of hillsides made it impossible to get a good view point.
So we were forever trying to find the right spot , we did spot a funnel cloud though in a valley.
We were quite greatful as we headed back towards Christchurch we caught the Timaru storm, drove through it with very heavy rain and some overhead IC,CC strikes, but had decided to get on the other side of the storm to stop and get photos etc there.
However the majority by this stage had moved offshore.
Apon arrival in Rolleston we did note the TCU near Birdlings Flat so decided to head out there for abit, and met up with Aaron and Steven Graham as well.
The southerly went through with nothing so all hopes were lost for abit, until we decided to check the radars just outside of Birdlings where cellphone reception was and noted an area of cells moving up the coast.
It did turn into a thunderstorm for awhile but we couldnt see the lightning this was about midnight, the cell would have been on the coast between Ashburton and Rakaia and was quite intense.
The main core which was quite odd seemed to push south away from us but oh well a nice day out see some country side etc, i have a few photos ill put up later.
Ive only got one good photo really, the others have a few good ones.

Re: South Island Thunderstorms 30th December
I drove out to near Rakaia Huts at about 7:30 hoping to see some offshore lightning... As Jase said, met up with the others at Birdlings about 11. Some decent rain at about 1:30 but that was all.
