Potential thunderstorms east coast SI 7th January 2013
I see MS have got the east coast at a moderate risk today. Day off, so I thought I'd chase.

Re: Potential thunderstorms east coast SI 7th January 2013
there is a strong upper level NW or shear up there today as the storms are getting flung off the coast offshore and at pace aswel..

Thunderstorm chances for today look very low, except for the Oamaru ones, well, actually non exisitent for Canterbury today despite the forecasts but you have to be prepared just in case

Re: Potential thunderstorms east coast SI 7th January 2013
It never really looked too threatning today the CU clouds that did develope quickly peeled over at a certain capping level, the southerly got abit gusty though.
Wind has gone back to the NE here now so there is a slight chance something could flare up in a few hours with that wave of cold upper air moving through and another southerly change say 8-9pm.

I tried my luck near Rakaia for some time, waiting to see if any offshore development would come near the coast for some shots ... but no, not at all. I still took some shots out of boredom ...

Me too! I went to the Rakaia mouth for the same reason, I went to the end of Smiths road.
Then headed to Dunsandel when I heard a cell was forming in Darfield. Saw some promising convection on the way, but it came to nothing.

The colder upper level air was back over North Otago this afternoon hence the thunder there.
