Perhaps you need a slightly longer-term average period David. ;-) As you said, Dec 2010 was an exceptionally warm month, both nationally and for Akld.

Below are some preliminary NIWA figures showing just how much this Dec's T-means were above the 1981-2010 average for the main-centres…

+1.1C ... Auckland, Mangere
+1.3C ... Auckland Aero
+1.4C ... Tauranga Aero
+1.4C ... Hamilton Aero
+0.9C ... Wellington, Kelburn
+1.2C ... Christchurch Aero
+1.3C ... Dunedin, Musselburgh

Obviously I should do more researching Nev! I recalled Dec 2010 being warmer than normal and I thought Dec 2011 was cooler than normal, so when I saw Dec 2012 average was in the middle I assumed it was about normal....

Do you know the actual Dec 2012 average temperatures for Mangere and Auckland Aero?

Thanks Nev. Looks like they use (Max + Min) / 2 for their mean. I prefer using the sampled-every-minute mean which gives me 18.7C for Dec 2012 (compared to 19.4C for Dec 2010 and 17.9C for Dec 2011)

NIWA summary, https://www.niwa.co.nz/sites/default/fi ... er2012.pdf
We all felt the warmth. A feature of the month for northern NZ was the humidity with a week of dewpoint temperatures around 20C.

NIWA are calling the NW Auckland wind event on the 6th Dec a tornado. In the near future I would like to start another thread for this event as it was a very significant weather event for NZ.

The main centre data gives Tauranga an annual total of 2307 hours of sun (rounded totals added), about 300 hours behind Whakatane. Tui time for sure re Whakatane - even allowing for Tauranga's June total looking a bit understated.
