Aha that's funny to see the same lightning captured from an other spot, and I've got that CG too Steven ! What a bad mother it was though, I was just changing the shooting parameters, dropping the ISO and increasing aperture and it's still massively overexposed !!! 8-o
And before I crash in bed one last shot showing part of the cloud a bit earlier than the other shots (I didn't realise it was moving out of frame).

Aagh.. I was gonna post some of mine, but I'm too embarrassed with my 8Mp.. I seriously need a new camera! Great shots, everyone. I relocated off the port hills when sea mist started spoiling the view. Took all my good pics by Kaituna stream into Lake Ellesmere. I got the same lightning as some of you other guys too!

So that was from tbe second cell, that I could see too
But decided I could noy stay up another 2 hours
Did that cell stay active all the way to BP?
Bit of rain here now as the main front goes over

It was still well offshore to the south when it died out. I used a tele zoom at 135-155mm for the shots I posted.

For those unfamiliar with the area, Coopers Lagoon is on the shore about half way between the southern end of Lake Ellesmere and the mouth of the Rakaia. Takes about the same time to get there as Birdlings but has no lights nearby (good spot for aurora watching) and mobile coverage

And if you like birds it's also a spot well worth a visit, and Hector Dolphins very often visit it too ! :D

By the way the last lightning shot I took was at 23:45, and I saw a few more flashes while driving back home. The cell had long quiet and short busy moments once the bulk of activity was over, but still worth shooting trust me ! ;)

No lack of modesty, you guys know I post lots of shots and I didn't look at them all before going to bed ... ;)

A "reflection shot", just for fun.

And the last 2 shots I got at 23:42 and 23:45. The white balance settings were wrong so the overall colors are a bit off ...

For once I have indulged in resizing the shots to a decent size, if you have a small monitor resolution it could be a lil' too big to fit (and I'm not sorry ;) ).
Amazing shots folks. Some are quite spectacular. Lacertae, in your third shot, I see you captured a meteor!

It's a satellite, but I do have a shot of a meteor (unfortunately no lightning at the same time) ! A nice little treat I can tell ya. ;)
DSC_4204_nzwf.JPG
There was also a flyby by one of the "biggie" at about 22:40 if I remember well. Its magnitude reached -4 (visual evaluation) but the Satellite Tracker is overloaded and I can't check if it was the ISS, the chinese station or else. At -4 I'd say ISS but ...
Did you see it too Steven ?

OK time to let today's storm chasers post reports and stop dealing with last night ! :p

EDIT : it was indeed the ISS I spotted last night coming from the south towards the zenith. I was just wrong by 1 hour ... Wed Jan 16/11:42 PM, max elevation 67, approach 22 above SW, departure 67 above SSE

Just going through the photos that you guys put up from last night lightning show from off Birdlings Flat/Coopers Lagoon or whatever. Good show.
One or two flashes were observed from here but not as what was in the photographs that you took.
You all deserve NZThS T-shirts, actually I think Steven Graham has gotone.
I've gotnone left, my one is a bit fraid.
Maybe through Aaron, we should design a new one and get some more maid<3
