The latest scans on the Auckland radar are showing what looks like what Canterbury had last night. When I asked if it was hail or snow this was Paul Mallinson reply
It looks to me like the 'bright band'. This is the melting layer above the radar where snow is melting and turning to rain. The radar beam looks up through this layer at an angle.
What the radar in Auckland is currently showing looks like what the Chch radar was showing last night. Interesting indeed.

I go by the mantra that if it hurts, it's hail \:D/

Greylynn showing 4.3C, the coldest temperature in showery conditions I can recall in my years in Auckland apart from the rare snow day in Aug 2011.

Fantastic! It was a really deep delayed loud rumble over this way. You know, the thunder that finishes...but then actually hasnt...and adds a few even louder rolls  Must have been moving too as it only took 5 mins for the cell to arrive here after that!

There was a smidgen of snow visable on Pirongia this morning. The advantage that Mt Tarawera has is that it is bare rock. The forest cover on Pirongia hides most of the snow that ocassionaly falls on it.

I just had a look at Pirongia. No obvious snow but there could be some at the very top which is still covered in cloud.
Just looked at the timelapse webcam at the Rotorua gondola - after a band of late afternoon showers, Mt Tarawera had a good coating of snow. (quite well down - not just the summit area)

oh wow that did well to stay the night. yea it is a shame its not rock. we would see snow far more often if it was. I was talking to my old man who said at around 10am yesterday there was heaps as he could see it from hamilton. that goes well with the report from the farmer which i spoke to. I looked thismorning from hamilton but couldnt see any from here.

I guess this report is feasible, but at about half the height of Mt Pirongia... ?

On Tuesday night light snow fell on the Waitakere Ranges in west Auckland. A Radio New Zealand Morning Report producer says about "an inch of snow" has settled at the top of the ranges, which are about 470 metres high.

I would say it was possible given the conditions being reported in auckland last night. Most likely hail but it could quite possibly be snow.

Yes, but Tarawera is also about 200m higher than Pirongia.

True. However on this ocassion, the freezing level was well low enough for Pirongia as well.
