Re: General July Weather
Absolutely hosed down down here pretty much non stop since about 1am until an hour ago, all the creeks & rivers are up. Grey & Hoki recording about the 60-70mm mark but 9km up the road here I have cleared 100mm. Always guaranteed a day of solid rain whenever I work up on the vats at work

Weather pattern for Auckland continues to look lethargic.
Also its looking dry in the near term for the east of the country.

Re: General July Weather
Looking like we're not even going to reach 50mm this month! That would make it the driest July since July 1993, during which only 25mm was recorded at Owairaka.

Talking to locals they feel this is one of the warmest starts to winter in living memory with no cold spells on the horizon for another 2 weeks at least either...so much for some people's predictions of a cold winter!!

Niwa said to expect above to above average temps http://www.niwa.co.nz/climate/sco/seaso ... ember-2013. Have not heard anyone predicting a cold winter?Bradley wrote:Talking to locals they feel this is one of the warmest starts to winter in living memory with no cold spells on the horizon for another 2 weeks at least either...so much for some people's predictions of a cold winter!!

Re: General July Weather
Mean temps for Chch were nearly bang on normal for May and June, July has been warmer, but more so in the night time minimums (fewer frosts) so people havent perceived it as being warmer). Most of Canty was near normal in May but much of the Plains was colder in June (due mainly to colder day times). This month has certainly been warmer, with markedly fewer frosts. Along the eastern Plains and near the coast there has been more cloud than normal, and that usually makes people feel that a winter is colder. The western Plains are probably different.

Re: General July Weather
Yeah it certainly has been abit milder but also slightly damper I reackon, most fronts that have come up the island have delivered some rain at times even NW fronts.
So I think the milder dry days are very welcome in many areas, as for winter in higher parts which received the big dumping of snow back in June I think they would be saying no to more snow.
But as winter often does come back and bite us in the bum near the end, a lot seem to think August/September seems to be the way now days the seasons dragging out longer.
Speaking of which another just right temperature day today with some high cloud from afternoon and a fresh gusty NWer for a time, received 5.5mm of rain from last evenings shower belts from the west.

Sunshine MTD for Ch'ch is about normal. Re Bradley's comments - there are always those whose speak darkly of an upcoming "cold winter", and who can be safely ignored.

Yeah I think the trick is to identify these people and not to be sucked in by their 'gut feeling' about really cold winters coning up just because we had a hot dry summer...RWood wrote:Sunshine MTD for Ch'ch is about normal. Re: General July Weather
Temperatures have been near average here, cloudy and dry.
Chch Airport has had 9 days this month with a max temp above 15C as has Ak Airport, Wellington Airport has had 2( from MetService web site)
Remember May and June had some significant stormy weather.

It was still over 10°C here at midnight with the NW but it died off at 1am allowing the air temp to drop to freezing by sunrise.
