You wouldn't want it any closer. Hope the car road cam got something. Looks tame at the mo. Am at Maketu turnoff about to get radar updates.

Darn, what I thought had promise has evaporated. Time to continue North. Maybe that Waikato stuff will make it over the Kaimai Forcefield.

The next line has gone. Maybe that one back down by Taupo might make it up?

observed some 20 cgs at Waihi Beach, no hail though,CBs looked quite low topped for the time of the year and unlikely to get the severe tick. Not alot of precipitation either. Some good punchy updrafts aroud Do you have curly hair now tgsnoopy ? cant get closer than that and survive ! the joys of storm chasing.

Excellent photo tgsnoopy!
The storms today were very electrified but a lot of the lightning was IC from what we saw.

A long drive today but the reward was several good storms between Tokaroa and Matamata. Plenty of lightning observed today also hail atleast pea size. I think we turned our back on some good storms this evening in order to get back to Auckland for 7pm. Had problems with my camera today but managed some photos

That one took me by surprise. There was no rain at the time. Landing as close as it did was a shock literally as I felt the leader try to get away from me. You can't tell in the low res photo posted, but it was post the strike, just a string of dots.
Watching the storm in Tauranga at present. Otumoetai just lost power. If car cam is recording ok will have video.

Apparently 33kV feed to Otumoetai and Matua was hit. May have affected areas further North too.

Re: Unstable Jan 9th - North Central North Island
I do have video of the close to me strike. The car is pointing a little too the left, but with what you do see & with simultaneous noise, there is no mistaking how close that strike was. It actually stopped the car camera from recording, there is a gap until the camera is reset by me starting up the car over an hour later which is disappointing cause you miss a lot of lightning & hail shower etc.
Just waiting for the card to copy off so I can look properly, but may take a day or two to get it up where it can be watched.

Yes, quite unfortunate.....jamie wrote:Looks like I missed yet more rain. Seem to be missing out on a lot compared to you Tim.
Have you checked inside your Rain cone recently? Spiders nesting I have found to be quite bad this season.
If they get in they love to tie down the tipping bucket....
I wouldnt be so sure about that, unless you were all prepared to stay out there till mid evening, there would have been hardly anything. I went back north a little bit later than you guys did. But going by Radar I didnt miss anything too special. Core punched the Karipiro/Cambridge cell going through SH1 from Tirau. Very heavy rain and plenty of CG's from that storm, quite a few clear airs toospwill wrote:I think we turned our back on some good storms this evening in order to get back to Auckland for 7pm.

Definitely not spiders. Checked that the other day. It's simply been the rain hasn't got to us. You have had 25mm this month. I've had 10mm.Tornado Tim wrote:Yes, quite unfortunate.....jamie wrote:Looks like I missed yet more rain. Seem to be missing out on a lot compared to you Tim.

An MCS type structure developed during the early evening and moved across western BOP giving that lightning show.
