'obviously nonsense'? While I agree it's highly improbable, I wouldn't go so far as to say it's impossible.

Do you have any ref for that? All I can find is this quote about Akld's climate from Te Ara (1966)
Thunder is heard about nine days a year.
The Met Service weather stations in the old days when they were manned 24hrs, recorded an average of 13.3 days for the Auckland CBD and 13.2 out at the Airport.

There was one year in recent times I counted over 25 days in Grey Lynn for one year.

Yes, that would be a thunder day but I doubt there are those kinds of obs in the data.

If there's a lot of wind and there's trees about or even in a city where there's a lot of noise you may not hear that distant thunder ...so ..a tricky one hey.

I think a thunderstorm should affect at least parts of a city or the whole city to be considered a recorded thunder day, not a storm in which skirts say 5-10km away from the city but within the actual region.

Auckland is much larger than 20km.

Yes, but the requirement is that thunder should actually be heard at the observational site, which under ideal listening conditions limits the area covered to a radius of no more than about 20 km.
