Snowing

Unread post by Guest »

Sleety snow from 1600 here at Puketapu weather station, and from 1700 the snow has become heavy and persistent. Air temp 0.9 C, windchill is -6 C, and we've a 12 to 16kt SSW wind. Our altitude here is a scant 40 metres above sea level! :)

Hi George.
I'm using your posting as Tony T's one is getting rather full now, up to page 8.
Your snowfall sounds good, amazing for Hawkes Bay.
Dosen't sound "BLASTY" as well, but then... I see a low developing off the HawkesBay coast at noon today.
Anyway, snowing again here in ChCh. 5:45pm

Snowing thickly again in Chch, and settling. I earlier thought the weather had cleared up in the city. This snow in Napier must be an exceptionally rare event, though I remember a freak snowstorm to low-levels (to almost sea-level) in northern Hawkes bay about 6 years ago. Pity the Napier webcam hasn't been updated since May.

Thanks Micheal - however it is dark and no weather (rain, snow) can be discerned from the webcam. BTW the Napier temperature has gone back up to 4C, so probably not snowing at sea-level there anymore. Further north I'd imagine back country places like Waikaremoana and Matawai getting alot of snow from this polar outbreak tonight.

Very low temperatures for Northland and Auckland this evening - only 4C in Kaikohe! And the radar still shows active preciptation over Northland. Aren't there several 600-700 metre high ranges in Northland?

Good idea Brian, where I am it is sheltered by the port hills and yes all winds / cloud formations? from the south I guess could be potentially or partially getting blocked or something similar. Then contribute the fact that I'm on a spit and that possibly sums up why I'm getting nothing in terms of snow....???

Raining quite steadily here at the moment 11:26pm

Hi Aaran.
Steven Graham, our forum owner and supervisor, posted a picture of one of the Cb's I saw, on Tony T's, now huge, posting. The tops would not be very high because of the cold air of this BLAST and the sun wouldn't produce much warming, hense the Cb being 'dead' . These Cbs either glaciated into snow or very small hail or ice pellets. The seas are warm at the moment, which could of aided the lovely batch of Cb's moving up through the Tasman associated with this 'rodent low.
Another 0.5cm of snow this evening on top of my Stevenson's Screen.

we were spared a air frost becuase the wind went more southerly (comes off the ocean) here, and the temperature rose from 4.4oC to a tropical 5.8oC!
i remember the last good polar outbreak (96?) it stayed SE all night and the whole south auckland area got a air frost which ruined lots of tropical plants (we grow bananas here) growing in otherwise frost free places! (tops of hills etc)

Cold day today, high of only 5 degrees. Not much of a thaw today compared to Monday.
The local council have started grading all the local sports fields today for a soccer tournament on Thursday, turning the area into a giant mudbath haha.
The southeast change on Friday will bring more snow to Mt Hutt, should set the rest of the season up nicely.
Cheers.

Dean! Excellent photo (heaps of snow!), The general thought for me was that Ashburton was allways on the coast but it is actually inland a bit, do you know how much it is above sea level?

And, also great photo Jeff!

Is that the type of weather in Auckland you like Micheal, he he. ;)

And John, I've noticed you like playing around with the different types of colours you can get the text to be,........cool!

Here is a photo of a Thunderstorm floating out to sea November last year (unfortunately quality isn't great), Love the new feature Steven Graham, thanks for making it available! :)

Yes Aaron,Ashburton is around 20 kms inland from the coast and 90 metres above sea level on the eastern flank to around 110 metres at the top of Allenton to the west.
Methven is 320 metres above sealevel, the bottom of Mt Hutt around 500m.
Cheers.
