Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
Just came back over the lewis pass and there was no snow falling both on the road or the highest mountains, just wet nw rain and wind and 7C at the top so that puts the freezing level at around 1500m up there.

Southerly change sounds like it's arrived here in the last few minutes.

Yeah. Looks like it.Razor wrote:Fairly vigorous looking line coming up the way...
Back to NW at the moment with a slight rise in temperature after being clear and fine for a while.
Could in inline for a "Busterly Blow"

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
Ok, that was really unusual: Nice amount of horizontal snow with the wind gusts, small flakes and not settling on the ground but giving the telephone pole a good white coating on the one side. The weird thing was that looking straight up it was a clear sky and I could see a heap of stars! Dunedin 9:30pm 180m (Opoho).
I am Heisenborg: you will probably be assimilated.

Turned southerly here but nothing much, just before 10pm, with some light rain and drizzle.
The temperature halved.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
Been interesting to watch, it certainly gave the hysterical types over on Facebook a chance to vent and get over excited. That normally wouldn't bug me, but the reality is that far too many people hang on ever CAPITAL LETTER BLAZING HEADLINE OF IMPENDING DOOM. and now the good folk of Chch think the actual Metservice got it wrong. These cowboys have a duty of care to not cry wolf so often- or at least moderate the capital letter Hypeing

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
The wind didn't get very strong here at all in fact barely made 35kmh, so the frontal line certainly struggled against the westerly flow holding it back over south Christchurch and towards the peninsula.
Most of the lightning looked to have occurred on the coastline around Rakaia river mouth in a brief spat .
All clear now for round two tomorrow morning.

Lots of small hail in Dunedin and looks like settled snow. There would be a dusting of real snow in the mix.

not very often you see the marine forecast out by that amount on timing these days

A light covering of hail here in Mosgiel. The snow level on the hills is down to about 200m and mostly light. Shower activity around here has been mostly weak in the SW flow.
