1000mm in 6 hours? No way. That's vastly more than NZ's 12-hour record, which encompasses some extremely wet West Coast sites. The 48-hour record is "only" 1049mm!!

Heavy rain event 8-13 June
I would love Metservice to report on this storm. I was amazed at just how strong the winds were right on the southern edge of the centre of the low. It was more like an eye wall of a cyclone. Once we were in the eye here, it was calm and stars were out. Exactly the same as the report in that article. I would love to know why there was the intensity that there was with both wind and rain.

Yes, I was a little surprised MS didn't write a blog about this event. Perhaps they're too embarrassed about just how strong those winds actually were, lol.
Here's a few 'official' gust-speeds from the June 10/11 event, the 2007 July event and Ex-TC Bola…

149 km/h at Musick Point!? Wow! That's only a few km north of here, and we only got gusts to 76 km/h

Agree. That sounds more like the sort of thing that could only happen at La Reunion IslandRWood wrote:1000mm in 6 hours? No way. That's vastly more than NZ's 12-hour record, which encompasses some extremely wet West Coast sites. The 48-hour record is "only" 1049mm!!

Re: Heavy rain event 8-13 June
Just as a PS - the world record for 12 hours is 1144mm at the notorious La Reunion island group - which holds a whole pile of rainfall records due to its topography among other things - that occurred during a tropical cyclone. The Coromandel suggestion is just nonsense, but no doubt someone in the media will try to give it respectability. Good comment David - La Reunion holds the 24-hour record of 1825mm.

Re: Heavy rain event 8-13 June
I recall the EW rainguage at Castle Rock on the Coromandel getting 270mm for the event.
The interesting thing about the wind event was the barometer was not unduly low. A 1002hpa low. There was obviously a squash zone with high pressure to south.

Bola certainly had some big winds in places...130 at Auckland Aiport..
and wow on the Musik point speed
yes, a real squash zone alright
the relatively fast movement of the low must have been a factor
a M/S hand drawn isobar map of the event would be cool to see

Re: Heavy rain event 8-13 June
the NZ Farmers weekly has an article about the top of the coromandel getting hit hard
(actually the NW corner...basicly spill over (wind driven) rain on the leeward side of the Moehau Range)
report is of 300mm in 3 hours! (recorded at sea level)
described as the worst in living memory (i.e 150 years)

There was a 50knot low level jet feeding moisture into those ranges. Obviously the faster the air hits the mountains the heavier the rain.Manukau heads obs wrote:the NZ Farmers weekly has an article about the top of the coromandel getting hit hard

And may there was some instability in it. I don't recall any ts activity occurring though.
