Re: General August weather
If you look at the 1000-700mb thickness, there is some cold air going up the east of the country Thursday. Low topped wintery showers possible.

General August weather
Metservice have posted a northland radar shot on their Facebook site. Very heavy rain showing up on the radar. Which they would hurry up and link it up.

Re: General August weather
If they have data flowing into the office then its linked up (but to what extend im not sure), what I think is holding it up is radar data "tweaking" so the data blends well to the rest of national radar and to eliminate false echos caused by terrain etc.jamie wrote:Which they would hurry up and link it up.
The image posted by Gorgina on Metservices Facebook seems to be a metconnect image, so connection issues seem unlikely.

Re: General August weather
Re Northland radar data, I assumed MS still only had satellite relay, in which case continuity might be an issue due to rain-fade?

Re: General August weather
22mm overnight here. Upto 100mm in 12hrs on Coromandal ranges.
Looks like a showery day developing. We want to get some surface heating today to spice the convection up into thunderstorms.
18C would be a good temp today for convection.

Few Storms 100ks out from Cape Reinga.
Metservices Thunderstorm Outlook looks promising today:
Metservices Thunderstorm Outlook looks promising today:
AMENDED TO RAISE RISK OVER NORTHERN NORTH ISLAND to HIGH
Temperatures aloft are expected to cool today leading to increasing instability.Daytime heating is becoming strong enough now to trigger afternoon convection along lines of wind convergence.
This morning, there is a moderate risk of one or two thunderstorms over northeastern Northland where a narrow band of heavy showers is moving southeast .
There is a high risk of scattered thunderstorms forming over Northland,Auckland,Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula this afternoon with rainfall rates generally in the 10-25mm/hr range. There is an additional risk that one or two of these may produce localised downpours in the 25-35mm/hr range due to heavy showers moving over the same location for several hours. All this activity is expected to move out of Northland towards evening and then move from Auckland,Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula into Bay of Plenty this evening. For all other locations north of a line from north Taranaki to East Cape there is a low risk of thunderstorms through the period.
Elsewhere, no thunderstorms or significant convection expected.

Re: General August weather
Today was the risk day for thunder but it was a conditional risk on there being surface heating. Not a great time of year to be relying on heating.

Re: General August weather
nothing in Tauranga today, tonight looks like everything will break up as it crosses the waikato. Yes tomorrow a long shot but weather often delivers when not forcast.

Yes. Looks like a period of settled weather for NZ to end off August, although could be a tad cold at nights.David wrote:GFS surface pressure for midday Saturday. That sure is a massive anticyclone.

Some colder nights on the way, August has been frost free around here so far.

8C here and just had a brief flurry of either fine snow or very small hail - it was blowing about in the wind.
