Before the lower overcast encroached over here in the last quarter-hour or so, I glimpsed more explosive-looking clouds to the east.

That must have been the bolt I saw that made a really big boom even in hornby. It was wicked. Neat photo.

Nice pic Steve! a good inflow NE feed that storm in Christchurch today! it really revd up once it hit the city.
The NE picked up aswel with low cloud rolling underneath it and as soon as the storm passed it died back again and was completely clear, interesting!!
I too noticed the back end of the updraft starting to rotate and was beginning to wonder if a supercell was developing! great to see storm season alive and well :)

Some interestingly-sized hail at one point in Bromley this arvo, didn't last but from inside the workshop it looked unexpectedly "big".

It would be of interest of some rainfall totals of this around the Port Hills/BP as I was in Halswell when this storm developed and occurred. At the Halswell New World, I noticed some very big slushy drops of semi-frozen rain fell down and there was evidence of that in the car-park. Halswell was at the very edge of the storm.
Bob Crowder gave me a ring and said that a lightning strike was very close to where he lives and that a tree, near Princess Margaret Hospital was hit by lightning and he heard a fire engine go past, possibly to that tree.

interesting to point out john about the hail.. for some reason we have been getting a fair bit of that type of soft but large hail with severe storms.
Todays jet stream would of also created good forcing today.

Looking back, looked like a good set up over coastal Canterbury with excellent shear and as Mike says, the jet stream.

Bit belated but, thought I'd post this series of Akld radar images from Wed/Thu night for those interested. Shows the cell's hail well, its path, and just how fast moving it was across the region…
