Show weekend weather east of Arthurs Pass

Unread post by JETNZ »

I would welcome your considered opinions on how much rain the Poulter Valley (and headwaters) is likely to receive from the period Friday 14th 7am to Saturday 15th 7pm.
This chart suggests it could be very wet Saturday 7am but how far east it will move is the question...
http://www.metvuw.com/forecast/forecast ... zsi&tim=96

We do not cross the main Poulter River but the numerous side streams, two of which are significant enough to be uncrossable in flood.
The Poulter is often chosen by trampers for its dryer eastern situation when it's hosing down on the Main Divide...
Is there a possibility the system may arrive later than on the current charts?
Thanks.

The Poulter is a good option in NW conditions, as long as you aren't crossing it. The stream draining Binser Saddle can occasionally be an issue though in signaficant spillever rain, as can the Casey if you are going right up to Poulter Hut (in which case you have to cross the main Poulter too)

Not much will stop you getting out from Casey Hut though, if going over the Andrews saddle route- nearly always a safe option.

Thanks, yeah more options and exits if we're walking. We have MTBs so have to go out the same way via the 4wd track.
The Saturday weather chart looks heavy duty, just how much spillover likely to fall in the valley is the question. Only going as far as Casey. So just Mt Brown Creek and Pete's Stream to cross plus the numerous creeks that cross the track...
