Canterbury Show Week Weather

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

I thought I would start a topic on this for weather for the coming Show Week for Christchurch/Canterbury.
Looks as though it would be a coolish sort of week, with a southerly influence but daytime heating could cause some convectiveness and possibly convergence events happening which should result with thunderstorm development which, sadly, could cause damaging hail to form.
A fine day ,however, should event for Show Day and make it a pleasant WE for many.

Might be good or interesting for Cup day. A feisty North to NE blowing here at the moment.

Some interesting-looking clouds beginning to boil up to south-east, also to north-east.
Wind getting gusty, and seems, since this morning, to have backed right round the clock to westerly again.

Gusty persistent NW winds here which are quite annoying :x
MS did have a warning overnight about NW gales, but this afternoon's ones seem to be more persistence, here, than in the period they had on their warning, for some reason? :-s

NE is quite fresh at times. Radar has indicated a few high readings about mid Canterbury late today. Wouldn't be surprised if it was decent hail.

Yeah storm about Hinds looking at the radar. Hail and lightning producer. Really popped up well a head of the change out of nothing

Just looking at the cell offshore from oamaru looks like some rotation there maybe a few waterspouts, but yeah there could be some storms on the coastline up to banks tonight probably around 10pm-12am with a brief SW change.

that's a good point jase, just seen that cell on radar, may well be a slight hook there.
Some intense hail in that cell aswel, perhaps not warned severe though of course being offshore.

In way back to auckland I saw a small cell that was clearly rotating. Couldn't get a photo but the updraft definitely had a cork screw. No idea where we were tho. It was rather small cell and looked very LP

Well im going to say moderate to high risk for canterbury tomorrow, i could be missing something vital in terms of forcasting a thunderstorm, but from what i see i think it looks good.
Only thing i cant see very well is how much instability is about as the bsch gfs models are down! annoying!!

Seems to be thunder out there again just now, and a chill breath from the south-east.

made me laugh the tv breakfast reporters...the sun is out now but we expected hail showers about now going by the forecast...well the sun suddenly came out because a hail shower just missed you ,lol

Today would be a rather coolish day to be at the Show. There was a wintry type of hail shower that went through but most of the inky black looking stuff remained north of the city.
Variable weather here, NE for a while but now back to the NW, with possibly a SW coming up later.
EDIT: I've given up on any thunderstorm chances now. not enough oomph, to get things going :(

A wee bit of a mention on the front page of this morning's PRESS about yesterday's weather including a photograph of the hail on the roads around Methven.

It was a fine day for the Show today.
No NW winds to speak of, that was traditional in years past, although recent years, Show day has been much cooler.
