Just an update. It would appear that Musselburgh only recorded 142.0mm for the same 24 hrs to 4am yesterday. However, during the same 24 hrs a PWS in Green Island recorded 228mm and a Vantage Pro2 in Mosgiel recorded 238mm.
How reliable is vantage pro at Mosgiel with 238mm ?, Dunedin Airport recorded 111.4mm (MS)

I would've thought a Vantage Pro2 would be one of the most reliable PWS's. There's another nearby PWS (WH1081) also in the Mosgiel township that recorded 221mm for the same period. I also recall One News interviewing someone from Mosgiel who said he'd emptied a similar amount from his rain-gauge. Dunedin Aero is quite a bit further SW and was probably more on the edge or more sheltered from the front.

Thanks Nev, I think the difference between the Airport and Mosgiel rainfall looks a little unbelievable .
I did find a couple of Mosgiel weather stations that are more in line with the Airport rain total however I'm not sure how reliable the info is.

The guy you saw on TV, if it was TV One news said he emptied 214mm out of his rain gauge.

Read this - I think the 1923 event was much more severe for the Dunedin area - and was associated with a lot of damage elsewhere in NZ.

My father was a 10-yo in Milton at the time - his explorations of flooded streets could have turned out badly.
