Re: Frosts 2015
Heading towards a decent frost here with clearing skies and wet roads, there will no doubt be black ice around tomorrow morning. Hopefully they grit the roads this time.

Re: Frosts 2015
We got to -2.4°C, and now sitting on -1.8°C with very thick fog.
Lovely sunny day above the fog, but it'll be pretty miserable in town.
With this mornings frost I could have my first ever monthly average minimum temperature in the negatives......

That's usually a pretty safe bet during winter indeed. Damn the fog!Tim S wrote:Isn't it always pretty miserable in reefton town??einzack wrote:We got to -2.4°C, and now sitting on -1.8°C with very thick fog.

Summer however is a different story.
But actually looking forward to a change in climate shortly to just round the corner from you there Tim.

Round the corner from where? If you mean coastal Otago it needs to be pointed out that many of the lowest sunshine tallies in summer months have been there and in parts of S Canterbury...

Yep, coastal Otago has my name on it - I'm moving to Waikouaiti in a few months. Lived there before so know what it's like.RWood wrote:Round the corner from where? I do remember the NE-summers which are indeed miserable, but on the whole it's a nice spot. The other good thing about living on the north side of the hills (relative to Dunedin) is that you miss most of that damn SW'er which can be pretty tough.
Most of my weather-related memories of Waikouaiti are very good. Not much rain, quite windy, usually pretty sunny (NE-wind exception), not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter. We'll see how it fares come October.....

Re: Frosts 2015
Better sun than Dunedin overall because of that SW superiority but nevertheless the mean summer sun from Dunedin northwards to at least about Waimate is lower than at Invercargill or main z
W Coast towns. Different story in the cooler half of the year of course.

Waikouiti is a great place lived round the corner in Warrington when we first moved here. Amazing spot just had a cold house. Climate is a lot better than the stats say for Dunedin. We fudge em so not everyone wants to live here.einzack wrote:Yep, coastal Otago has my name on it - I'm moving to Waikouaiti in a few months. I quite regularly talk to people from there and your right they tend to miss out on our snowy southerly changes. That can be a good thing though!

A frost here this morning as well, a bit white on the grass and some ice in a bucket of H20.

We were talking at work the other day about how much better it would be if Reefton was moved to the mine site location. Much better climate up there. Maybe Doc could subdivide when we're finished.

Metservice seem to do extremely poorly with their minimum forecasts for you Einzack?einzack wrote:Extremely white -4.1°C frost this morning. The thick fog is helping that effect.

They're not too bad most of the time.
The fog we get often means we don't get as low as they predict, but overall I think they do an ok job. The rainfall predictions are usually overstated, but recently we've had a couple of under predictions which I can never recall occurring before.

Re: Frosts 2015
Two good frosts yesterday and today here.
Yesterday was -5.0°C and today is -5.3°C (so far) which is an August record.
No fog yesterday which was very nice, but some has just rolled in now which could make for a miserable day if it doesn't clear quickly.

Down to -5.8deg here and thankfully no fog, just hoping the SW doesn't come up during the day.
