The coroner accepted Fletcher Construction did not breach any safety standards regarding the portacom and nothing could have been done differently to prevent Dacayan's death.

However, his death had brought the issue of tornado risk into focus and she recommended WorkSafe and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment consider further safety steps regarding temporary accommodation and if they should be secured to the ground.

A WorkSafe spokesman said the coroner's recommendations had been received and were being considered

I don't think this coroner realises how powerful a tornado is. No tie down would have secured this portacabin.

I agree, there is nothing that can be done about 1 in a million chance.

A person was injured in the Hobsonville event being in a portacom office structure.
Very rare events.

I am totally amazed more people haven't been killed from tornadoes. When I was in Perth you got about 2-3 year but they were along a vast area and mostly unnoticed. Although there was a very strong one by Aussie standards that went through Australind just near Bunbury. BoM classified it as an F2 To F3 from memory. People in the houses were mainly lucky on the timing of the storm. Also the fact that houses are generally made of a double course of bricks means they are generally very strong.

Tornadoes are very dangerous and its only a matter of time before someone else loses a life here or in Aussie. People generally don't understand that severe storms are dangerous and dont take cover. Not that I am saying these people did anything wrong, I would have probably been outside with my camera so I cannot talk!! But I do know what is a good photo op and when things are just plain dangerous and time to head for cover.
