I've had a look at the NIWA national summary for July, and it looks like a similar month to July 2001, with persistent frostiness. But last month appeared more changeable, with passing troughs and southerlies alternating with frosty highs. In mentioning the polar outbreak of the 5th, it claimed there were snow flurries to sea-level in the west of the North Island. Where? I heard there were low level falls in Taranaki, but I didn't hear of any flurries reaching sea-level.

I got 51.6mm for the month with nothing from the 19th except for trace recorded in misty, foggy, light drizzly conditions on the last 3 days of the month. Haven't done temp figures but I guess it will be a cold month here in Somerfield.

On TV last night Auckland was the only place to have below average sunshine for July in the entire country-88 hours(sounds typical) Eveyone keeps toutig Auckland is the sunniest of the 4 main centres-When did this last happen?
So far Were still just under 1000 hours for the year-Are we able to at least double that in just 5 months with the Spring around the corner???

Yes Michael....its been a dullish year. We had a wet summer which is where we lost out on the sun a bit. But wet summers are not normal for Auckland. Typically from Jan-Mar conditions are dry and most of the rainfall comes on a few very wet days. Part of my vocation is installing irrigation systems in residential gardens/lawns. These are usually switched on in mid-October and run untill about mid-April. Unusually last summer, irrigation could have been switched off.

From the Met service web site the official mean annual sunshine for NZ largest cities. Most of the main centres are on a par with the exception of
Dunedin which has very poor sun light given its lattitude.

Auckland city 2066hrs
Hamilton 2013 hrs
Wellington 2053hrs
Christchurch 2035hrs
Dunedin 1590hrs

other Ak region locations
Leigh 2108hrs
Whenuapai 2057hrs
Pukekohe 1854hrs

Interesting figures there Steven.
Nelson or places in the Nelson area must also come up high on sunshine hours
We haven't seen much sun here in ChCh over the last week or so with all that fog, mist , whatever.
