First morning of the year with ice here. Didn't drop below 1 tho so just a ground frost. Tonight should dip below zero.

Re: Frosts 2016
Slight frost here this morning, compared to what they got in town.
Down to minus 0.4C with just slight frosting on the decking, but on the way to work this morning, noticed white lawns and frosting over parked cars in Halswell.

I noticed the cold temp but not the wind.... Very odd.cbm wrote:Odd. Hamilton airport nudging -3 with gusts to 24kmph. Here in Cambridge town no wind and minimal frost. Karabatic outflow of sorts perhaps.

I only dipped to -0.8 recently but was still only zero until 6.30. The fog suddenly cleared then and the temp dropped as you would expect.
I assumed Hamilton had no fog but the wind is odd.

Re: Frosts 2016
For a karabatic outflow, these winds were quite strong yesterday morning in places, northern end of Amberley gets them coming out of the Waipara valley, yesterday mornings one just about cut ya in half it was so cold, then you can drive more 2kms towards CHCH and no wind.
This mornings lowest temps locally were -4.0deg here, Waiau -4.2 and Cheviot on -2.3deg

Re: Frosts 2016
-2.2 Ground frost here this morning, -1.7 ambient, both set at quite different times. (2.37 AM and 7.35 AM respectivly)
Could have a bit colder if the wind died down completely.

Re: Frosts 2016
A breeze is something we never get here during frosty nights, and thankfully fogs only in autumn.

Re: Frosts 2016
Yes, as I said on the GJW topic, I noticed from various burnoffs, whist driving down to Geraldine, smoke drifting eastwards out to the coast, obvious from a katabatic outflow off the Alps.Richard wrote:For a karabatic outflow, these winds were quite strong yesterday morning in places, northern end of Amberley gets them coming out of the Waipara valley, yesterday mornings one just about cut ya in half it was so cold, then you can drive more 2kms towards CHCH and no wind.

Um 9am today. Midday yesterday. Friday I wasn't home so I don't know when it cleared.
Freezing fog makes awesome horizontal icicles on the cars wing mirrors when driving.
