I thought this account of a severe hail storm in Canterbury on December 23 1956 might be of interest: there are diagrams of the path of the storm, descriptions of the event, and details of damage resulting.

It would of been interesting to see the sequence of events leading up to this with today's standards of forecasting.

Unfortunately there are not many papers on line about notable NZ weather events.
An online paper of a severe hail/wind storm over west Auckland 4 November 1984 which did approx $4 mil damage to horticulture (about 10mil in today's money). Written by the Met Service.
