Is there any explanation for what has caused this pattern in January? I believe we had a weak La Nina. But this resembled strong
El Nino style weather.

I blame an early and strong monsoonal low over australia
which forced the westerlies down and under it, which then popped up into the tasman as a SWer and has proviced alot of cloud and moisture too for the west coast of the south island (that is still happening)
but also with near neutral el nino/la nina, there was not predominant steering mechanmism
and also basicly the jet streams a tending to get more stuck in one pattern/place around the world more often and for longer, resulting in more extremes of climate , related to climate change/global warming

Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'January 2017 National Climate Summary'.
A tempestuous month, cool for many and very dry in the eastern North Island.
The national average temp of 16.4C was 0.7C below normal.
The month's highest temp of 33.6C was recorded at Hastings on the 12th, and the lowest of -1.7C was recorded at Mt Cook Aero on the 5th.
(Note that Chch Aero's T-mean is 2 points too low, as its 31C on the 31st was omitted)

This pattern looks set to continue for a few more weeks. Sea temps and humidity levels rising to more normal levels. The jetsream situation is worrying but nothing like N Hemisphere, The North Pole area may at times become a low pressure area instead of anticyclonic which will further disrupt things ie The surface temp at the N pole may at times be warmer than Siberia and Arctic N America due to ice melt.[ Antarctica is quite safe fortunatly due to the high elevation and mountains with no invading gulf stream]. Early days , watching with interest..
