Sunday (28th May) was a warm and humid day over most of the UK but not so much sunshine as recent days. The days high was only 24.9*C at St James Park, London. However, a massive MCS developed over Brittany around 18/19hrs and moved NE clipping the SE of England (mainly Sussex and Kent) late in the evening giving them a fantastic lightning show. The attached map records 145,000 strikes from 1800 on Sunday to 0600 on Monday and at times the strike rate reached 500 per minute. I was in Hythe (nr Southampton) and we missed the best of it, but we still had a few flashes and rumbles of thunder - second storm this weekend!

The MCS that moved up the Channel overnight Friday into Saturday had a cloud shield the size of Wales. The link below has some great satellite and radar images albeit with some rather flowery prose.

Nice storms, the English storm chasers in USA will be thinking they should have stayed home :> very quiet for storms in the US currently by their standards.

The CET for May ended up at 13.2*C which is +2.1*C above average, so another warm month. Indeed 23 out of the last 29 months (since Jan 2015) have been warmer than average. The EWR totalled 65mm which is bang on the monthly average. 8 out of the last 13 months have been drier than average with May spot on.

Provisional statistics for the spring season have been published by the Met Office and they show it was warmer, drier and sunnier than average. Indeed, they say it is the warmest spring on record (back to 1910) for Wales and Northern Ireland and the second warmest for England. There have been warmer springs in the CET record (back to 1659).
