Snow in the south, but still sunny weather in Christchurch

Unread post by tich »

It looks like heavy rain and a warm advection snowfall in the far south (inland Southland and Fiordland) today, as the AA road report warns of snow on a western Southland road, and flooding on a coastal road.

However, the run of fine weather continues up here, though I believe it'll come to an end tomorrow. The morning frosts are compensated by the mild afternoon temperatures.

Seems like the snow in Southland is a bit more significant than first thought- a MetService special advisory has now been issued. But it doesn't look like affecting any areas further north at this stage.

Looks like another frost (and high smog levels) in Chch tonight.

The wind has freshened from the south here in Ashburton with some low cloud drifting in.It would be great if the forecast was wrong and it moved further north.
Cheers.

The barometer has just gone up a bit here in Chch, and I notice a light breeze (probably a southerly). But still clear skies.

Amazing feathery stratus coming through from the south at the moment but nothing more than that. Fine patches around.
Nothing like what I heard they were getting in Spain.
Thunderstorms producing apple sized hailstones.
Does anyone have reports on this?

Here's a website I visit daily for a general run-down of the daily weather in the UK, plus other weather news. Lots of fun, we need something similar here.

The snow, it seems, has moved into Central Otago, judging by the MetService warning. 0.9C in Queenstown at 6AM. Only 1.6C in Invercargill at same time, with a high humidity - could be sleeting or snowing there too.

Cloudy in Chch, after some overnight drizzle.

I read in the XTRAMSN news that there's been about 10cm of snow between Roxburgh and Alexandra. The NOAA satellite shows thick band of cloud from just south of Dunedin through a large part of Central Otago and another band over northern Southland. That means there could easily be areas of significant snowfall, though not a general fall over the whole area. From the Dunedin webcam, it looks like a dusting on the hills above the city.

Partly cloudy in Chch with a moderate southerly. The 9AM and 12AM radars show a bit of activity in coastal mid-Canterbury, perhaps affecting Ashburton.

Apart from some overnight drizzle, it's been dry here in Chch today. Skies were clear for a while earlier this evening, but cloud has returned. Temps a few degrees warmer than Ashburton, but still on the cool side.

I hear it's even been snowing at Milford Sound (sea-level), with only a 2C max there, according to TV1 Weather.
