Queenstown only recorded 5mm and Wanaka 3mm for the month.

Queenstown had 264hours of sunshine compared to Auckland Mangere 129hours. Both new October records.

Cromwell recorded 28.6C on the 19th and 30C on the 20th.

...also, NIWA in their October report, no mention about the Geraldine thunderstorm on the 26th and the unusual thunderstorm on the early hours of the 11th over the BP/Port Hills area. 8-o

The storm on the 11th got a comment on the pdf.
On 11 October, Christchurch residents were woken by a thunderstorm that caused 21 lightning strikes
in less than an hour. Power was briefly cut to over 3100 homes in Clifton, Redcliffs, and Sumner.

Always need to treat new record highs set by EWSs with caution ... Queenstown's town site 258 hours in 1937 would likely be more significant (and it recorded 307 hours in November 1937, a contender for the highest NZ percentage of recordable sunshine in any month). Mangere's total looks very low but a check on the other 2 Auckland sites' readings could be interesting.
