Heavy Rain Event, SE Tasmania 10/11 May 2018

Unread post by Simon Culling »

Very heavy falls of rain have been recorded in the SE of Tasmania, particularly in and around the capital, Hobart. Most of the rain fell from late afternoon on the 10th May lasting into the early hours of the 11th and caused a lot of flooding in the area, even in the centre of Hobart - see the link below from ABC News:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-11/h ... ll/9750032

The highest figures reported on the BOM site for the 24 hours to 9am on the 11th were:

160.0mm at Grove Research Station
129.2mm at Hobart (Ellerslie Road)
112.0mm at Orford
92.6mm at Maria Island
57.2mm at Tasman Island

Even further inland, 70mm was reported at Melton Mowbray and 43.4mm at the Bushey Park Estate.

A tweet on the WMO site gives two more rainfall figures for the 24 hours to 9am on 11th May. They are 236mm at Mount Wellington and 179mm at a site in south Hobart. The former is at 1260m amsl on the mountain top and the figure of 236mm is the highest daily amount recorded there since its record began in 1961.

Some other BOM registered station totals from the Hobart suburbs for the same time period - 24 hours to 09:00 on the 11th:

194.2mm at Langley (River Bend Rd - 237m amsl)
188.2mm at Lachlan (Williams Rd - 168m amsl)
179.2mm at South Hobart (Hilborough rd - 160m amsl)
178.6mm at Kingston (Greenhill Drive - 54m amsl)
163.4mm at Allens Rivulet (167m amsl)

Some thunder was reported and it appears that a near stationery area of rain developed (on the western flank of an east coast low?) and the wind flow into the valley slopes appears to have created a seeder/feeder set-up.
