A fairly sunny and dry month for most, except for rainfalls in the lower-eastern North Island and inland Otago. A cold start was balanced by generally milder temps during the rest of the month.

The Ruakura Tmax looks high but agrees with the output from Cliflo. 22.0C on 17th and 23.0C 20th lifted the average. Was a notable run of early Spring warmth that week.

Wonder what's causing the Mangere anomoly? And why has it not been investigated? Hate to see bad data go into official records.

Yes, Ruakura's 23.0C on the 20th equaled its 1973 Sep record, since records began there in 1906. And its average T-max of 18.0C was 2nd only its 2013 record of 18.2C.

Also according to NIWA's September 2018 National Climate Summary, the month's national average temp of 10.5C was equal to its 1981-2010 average. The month's highest temp of 25.8C was recorded at Wairoa on the 13th, and the lowest temp of -6.5C was recorded at Mt Cook Aero on the 6th.

I wrote to NIWA and their 'technical team' is to 'follow it up'.
