Southerly Buster Eastern Districts 1 Feb 2019
Thought this one might be worth a wee thread. Might fizzle out but clearly the potential is there for a fairly vigourous change this afternoon. I note Dunedin was 28 degrees after midnight and Gore is 12 now

Change is getting to Ashburton soon, looks like a moderate SE in Timaru and Oamaru but not sure about the gust front if there is one yet. Rainfall rates for mid-north Canterbury are modelling quite high (10-15mm/hr through 40-5omm/hr) on the Metservice rainfall forecast right now.

Re: Southerly Buster Eastern Districts 1 Feb 2019
I welcome the southerly change coming through, but I hope the winds are not as severe as the northwesterly winds that hit the Rakaia/Hatfield area this morning. For the first time since we moved to Rakaia in 2013, our front door was close to being blown in. The manhole in the ceiling was getting lifted in our laundry area. at 7.44am a small tree was blown down across the road out at Hatfield.
Rakaia, 118asl.

Southerly through here at 12:30pm. Breezy but no low cloud with it yet.
Coming onto rain now from the west from higher up cloud.
i don't know about the NW ahead of the proper southerly as it has been a light southerly this morning and up to 28C when the sun was shining.
Edit: Low cloud and clag moving in now.

Wind's just changed here in Ashburton, quite gusty;
looks like dust being raised to the south.

Southerly buster just arrived here in Templeton. Not as strong (so far) or as photogenic as last week.

Re: Southerly Buster Eastern Districts 1 Feb 2019
I think the difference is last week we had more general heating time and actual ground heating, when it reached 33C prior to the change.
This time we rocketed to 29C for about 10 minutes before the change as the sun squinted through, only a scuddy looking line was visable this time.
Strong gusts near 60kmh at times but nothing like last week.
The rain band looks to be moving through fairly quickly even though its predicted to be steady around 7pm, the wind seems to be pushing the front through quickly so maybe 2-3mm at best from this one.

So nice to have this cooler change after such intense heat, will there be any rain though, not looking like it at this stage.

The previous event had instability and so a squall line developed. This event was stable.
If we can get a negative SAM in March or April then could be some interesting stuff happening, given the background El Nino and warm season.
