Yes, WSW alright.
Very unusual for the West coast to get snow to low levels rather than the east side of the South Island.

Re: General August Weather
Yes, Christchurch and it’s immediate surrounds continues it’s run with New Zealand’s least interesting climate ( although Geraldine seems to come in a close second ) - with all potential southerlies shifting South west leaving a bit of cloud, some sun and average temperatures.

Re: General August Weather
On a Wintry west/southwesterly not much gets past Balclutha along the east coast.
I see Milford Sound missed out on the low level snow.
Another very cold Winter system is in the models for next week.

Re: General August Weather
The airport there was mainly reporting sleet 2C on Sunday but they did call the precip snow on a couple of obs.
Some of the eastern Central Otago locations like Roxburgh and Millers Flat got 5-10cm.

GFS is modelling an unusually strong jet stream on Saturday. 200knots at 300mb! Looks like subtropical and polar air rubbing shoulders.

Re: General August Weather
Huge contrast in temperatures in and around Canterbury this morning where the winds have reached, from -4 Rangiora to + 8 here. Looking forward to some warmer daytime temps in the coming days

Re: General August Weather
yes, looks a bit excessive.
Should be a lot of snow up there though with ukmet model showing 82mm rainfall on Ruapehu up to Friday night and further heavy precip over the weekend.

Re: General August Weather
Patchy heavy rain moving onto the west of the North Island from afternoon. EU has low CAPE levels so lightning risk looks low at this stage. The upper level lapses rates are very supportive (500mb -24C) but there is a question mark around low level moisture. I think dp's of 11C needed for lightning.

Re: General August Weather
Last two nights have been kept a lot warmer by a westerly quarter wind, frosty around parts of Canterbury away from this wind though.

Re: General August Weather
Interesting what you said about WSW winds not getting much past Balclutha, spwill. My family had an 8 acre farmlet at Lawrence from 1990 to 2008 and we really got the crap weather from the WSW during the winter there.

Re: General August Weather
I recorded 31mm here earlier this morning from intermittent heavy convective rain.
Long range we may have squally thunder chances in Auckland Saturday to Monday. Bit uncertain but I reckon we will get at least 1 day anyway.

Re: General August Weather
Probably orographic lift across the Blue Mountains is the reason why Lawrence catches the weather.

Despite the weather in Lawrence its a beautiful wee corner of the world, always think poplar trees when I think of Lawrence.

Re: General August Weather
The 30-year means (below) published for Lawrence (1951-1980, but local records ran from 1920 to 1989) were in line with one of two patterns shown for much of Southland and Otago - maximum rainfall in early summer, a lesser uptick middle or late autumn, and least rainfall from July to September. The other pattern, typified by Invercargill, has an autumn maximum and a lesser early summer spike, but still the least rainfall in the July-September period.
