Looks like a fine weekend coming up which will be a welcome change from the unsettled August pattern.
Only 2 days without rain measured at Auckland airport this month.

Overcast and drizzly after being a nice pleasant day.
I hope we don't get changes like that here with the upcoming SSW event for the next cupla months? :(
I see the Rakaia radar is down again.

I would class August as a very settled month here in Rangiora (Chch area) with just 41mm of rain, 15days of the daily high 15C or above. Lovely late winter weather!

A relatively mild August overall, generally wetter in the west and dryer in the east, but also fairly sunny for most areas.

Note that Kelburn AWS (with one day estimated for missing data) will come in with about 185 hours' sunshine.

NIWA are still using the manual readings in their latest summaries. But yes, the Kelburn AWS's new sunshine recorder looks to be running about 10-25% higher than its manual C/S recorder over the last 3 months. I guess the odd 'burn-card' being blown away would no longer be an issue though... lol :D . I believe Tauranga and Christchurch also still use manual C/S readings.

Yes, Tauranga, Ch'ch and Alexandra are still C/S only - all disadvantaged in comparisons at present. Suddenly Kelburn is back on par again with the Kapiti Coast, where it was before electronics turned up. The locals there are deluded about their claimed extra sunshine … BTW I think virtually all cases of initially missing Kelburn records were due to communication failures between Met & NIWA. However one day seemed to be lost in Jan 2014 (I didn't research it) - and during the earthquake event in July 2013 access to the Met. roof was banned for 3 days, so no readings for them - though estimates were done. The manual sites at Palmerston (Otago) and Winton have not produced credible data for years and there seems to be no point in retaining them.

Perhaps these incidents from NIWA's notes should also be added to that list: ... 8)
  • 19-Oct-2012 - Suncard blew away and could not be found. Daily estimate for sunshine based on hourly radiation values.
  • 19-Jun-2010 - Suncard found partly out of recorder, possible affected by wind. Daily total entered but not hourly values.
  • 15-Jul-1987 - Inspection of sunshine recorder. Card was found to be very loose fitting and liable to moved in strong winds. Recorder in generally weathered condition. Replacement recommended.

Interesting, thanks. I looked at the other notes - nothing to indicate an explanation for the substantial (and slightly suspicious) drop in sun totals from decade 2000-2009 to 2010-2018. The issue will probably be academic now given the arrival of electronic measurement - I expect the manual readings will be phased out soon (though at Paraparaumu Aero and Invercargill Aero there has been a long period of overlap).
