Interesting site. Had a look around, good reviews and technical info, Thanks!

As for the photos, another idea has come to mind. A calender! It would be perfect!

Cheers

Yes, its a site worth visiting if you are looking to purchase a camera.
They havn't reviewed my camera yet , but its predecessor the G3 got an
excellent review.

The NZTS calender idea is a good one but you have to bear in mind, there is upfront cost which will need to be recovered in sales. I notice there is a weather calender out for 2004 with the Met Service logo on it.

I hadn't actually thought of an "NZTS" calender as such, I was just thinking of a calender for you to make for yourself (you do take all the awsome pictures!). For the time being I'll just leave it for the idea that it was and revisit it at a later date. Not a bad idea though Steven, John, what do you think of an official NZTS calender? ;)

Cheers

Calendars are not easy to do - I had a look at doing one a few years ago. Printing is really expensive, then comes the problem of selling it. To make matters more difficult you have to be prepared to sell it as SOR (sale or return) or consignment. Other than that, good idea!

Metservice has done those several years now.
As for cameras try Ebay they probably be cheaper in an auction than in our overpriced limited item shops

I had never thought of a NZTS calendar until you mentioned it, Aaron.
Yes that would be a good idea(Competition against the one that MetService puts out)
With Steven Williams from Auckland running as a hot contender to be an official NZTS member - I must organize a T -shirt to be sent to him!, those photos of his would made good calendar material but however most of the photos would be around Auckland.
I have not any good photos of Ts here in Canterbury although Bob Crowder does have a few good shots icluding one of a tornado funnel near Lincoln in 1969.
Would contributers to the calendar have to be NZTS members of which their are only a few or would we allow other people's photographs to be used?

John, send me some info on the NZTS. I have been aware of its existence for many years through the Met Society news letters.

I think Graeme makes valid points about the calender idea. Expensive and
hard to sell.

Michael...never purchase an electronic good without a proper warranty supprted locally by the Manufacturer. I doubt you would get that benefit from an item purchased at auction.

It still has a long way to go to get out of the "grip" of winter with 15's&16's as Auckland only warms about 1.5c per month till December so I say it will be "volatile" especially in October.
Its just started to rain as the front moves on now

Indeed a good idea, I want a thunderstromy calender with Cb's, tornadoes, dark clouds, hail etc where as Metservice takes photo's of the scenic cirrus in the big boring blue sky, how exciting....not! (sorry Micheal!) I have a few photos of round here in Cantab, to be honest though, out of all the ones I've taken and the limited time I've seriously tried to take photo's of Ts type of stuff (and the limited amount of Ts we get here in Cantab!) I've only got about two or so photo's that would do. I'll have to show you my range of photos John which has expanded slightly more since I last saw you. Stevens photos would be great!

Steven and Graeme are right though, expensive and hard to sell. I have a few ideas floating around in my head though...

I'll stay calm for the mean while John, Hope to hear a few reports tomorrow from you guys up north.

Cheers

This here looks to be something beefy right over Aukland.

http://www.metvuw.com/cgi-bin/mcgregor/ ... 00Z_ak.gif

Brian, sorry for the silly question but what exactly is a squall, I'm guessing a period of high winds (am I right?) more extreme to average winds during the day.

Cheers

Typical cold and awful

Its usually rain and accompanied often by sudden wind changes like W going SW quickly and gusty and then it can drop away soon afterwards again when the rain clears.

Nothing like that today here in Christchurch but the sky has been quite changeable.
Hey Aaron, nice line on the 6pm Rakaia Radar heading towards us. The barometer is quite low so anything could happen! :)

The line of showers passed through quickly before 6.00pm.
No thunder etc,but the clouds look much darker towards the coast.
Some light rain fell this morning from 5.30 till 9.00am.
Cheers.

the the trend is its getting slowly windier, but the squalls have gone.....i.e the average is getting higher than,,,.
its what I call a pressure wind (i.e as the barometer rises), and is also helped by clear night skies over the waikato, and the cold air near ground level, means there is a blockage and it forces the wind through the auckland isthmus more...

A squall is the outflow (downdraught) from a cumulonimbus which makes it quite distinct from a gust. Usually much stronger.

Cold evening in Auckland, temp 9C, passing showers and wind SW08knots. Maximum gust here today about 23knots. Central area does not get the wind the the Manukau suburbs/environs get.

Some heavy cb showers around this morning before the chilly blustery SW arrived.

Brief small hail shower in Amberley around 8.30pm. Always looked risky for hail from the maps for the last few days.

This here looks to be the culprit for the hail showers in Amberley:

http://www.metvuw.com/cgi-bin/mcgregor/ ... 0Z_cny.gif

I noticed showers passing overhead here in Chch and then it cleared, it is now an empty sky full of stars. This small front must of moved on through and given the hail in Amberley which is shown by the radar map.

Thanks for the info on squalls guys, oh well...now I know what they are,

Cheers
